    Default New Phalanx Formation

I saw someone post a new phalanx formation in this forum for a suggestion for RS2 but I also noted that it was a terrible shot. So I thought that I would get a better screen to show this. This is from the EB forums over at totalwar.org and is an unofficial modification of EB. The new formation is obviously the one that the Spartan's are using in the screenshots. Other mods that I know of that use this are ROP and RTR. So is there any chance of this being implemented in RS2?

I was the one that posted the picture but the picture didn't show it to good. And it's hard to see in these pictures but the Phalanx really pushes the formation their fighting against .

Yes, I know and I use it to great effect in my EB games. They actually push and keep formation instead of breaking formation upon entering combat.

Let me ask you guys a question cause I don't KNOW.

This formation is being used in ROP mod. Isn't that mod starting date like wayyyyyyyyy before RS2 starting date. And if so wound't this formation be out of date to the starting date of RS2. Or maybe the formation never changed.

I don't know I woould like to know though

They just recently switched to it because it better represents hoplite warfare as the keep formation and fight as a solid mass of men and push through the enemy line. They still fight overhand, but it just helps them function more like they should.

that formation has nothing to do with timeframe, it's just a way to represent hoplites and other spear-armed units using the "short_pike" attribute

I personally like it, it's much better than the Phalanx(which was slow and never really pushed) that Vanilla slapped onto Hoplites.

Sure it looks clogged up if you have multiple hoplites units pushing the same guy(They're really tight together but better than spreading out or unable to push together at all because of Vanilla Phalanx). However, the flexibility this gives Hoplites to actually move tactically with speed than push an enemy is a huge improvement.

Well, I hope they'll try it out or see it in action before making a decesion upon the matter.

What they basically did was add the short pike attribute but not give it the ability to form the RTW phalanx formation like the vanilla hoplites did. This allows them to run, fight, and hold a line without breaking formation. And they still fight overhand.

If RS2 didn't add this formation for its hoplites, then I'd make a minimod that did. Lets put it that way.

That would be great , but let's wait on the choice of the RS2 team first .

In my install I've modded the normal hoplites that used the phalanx formation to use htis. I found that this set up works best to hold a line when I mod the unit spacing to be the same in loose as in normal; then set them to loose + defense mode and they work great for the front line.

However, I find that this also lessens the hoplites 'pushing power' compared to the way the city hoplites and armored/royal hoplites play in RS. So I kept the city hoplites the way they are and use them as a reserve force to charge in an push through the enemy line after they get tired.

Lessens pushing power?? Are you sure that you used it ??? Since pushing is exactly what they do.

If you've got BI, combining the short_pike attribute with shield wall gives a pretty sweet result.
