    Default Historical fiction.

hey people i was just wondering what some of your favourite books are and your top authors, not just books about Rome but any historical time period.

My favourite fiction author is Bernard Cornwall, i was a die hard major sharpe fan , but the warlord chronicles, grail quest and the viking invasion series sucked me in loved all of these series of books. brilliant characters and setting, great battles and historically accurate or following a historically accurate time period of events at least lol !

also Conn Iggulden with the Emperor series i'm just starting the third book entitled "The Field of Swords", the first two have been terrific. He's equal to Bernard Cornwall brilliant characters and battles, you get sucked into the leading character feeling all of his emotions. brilliant pair of authors!

ive also tried a book called "Centurion" by Simon Scarrow, this is another series but i stupidly didn't buy the first book lol this was also pretty good but i didn't find myself getting into it like the previous authors got to me !

so what boooks do you guys love and why?? trying to stick to books of antiquity through to the dark ages preferably, but still suggest any which are brilliant !

hopefully hear from some of you !

I'll have to type them into google lol cheers MarcusTullius, i start getting a bit down when i'm finishing books too quickly, like having more brand new adventures lined up ready to read !

That sounds nuts martyr , has the technology been advancing to a stage at present? or a higher degree of technology?
praetorians with machine guns lol could be a bit too outlandish for me but you can't dismiss it until you've tried it , cheers bro

Well i hope you enjoy your Cornwall book as much as i did, my favourite series was the king arthur ones (Warlord chronicles), the chaos after the demise of rome. The atmosphere he creates of what the british isles have lost, citys crumbling into ruin as the skills the romans brought are slowly forgotten.

    all the best bro

Couldn't agree more. I was wandering the library stacks and chanced upon it. What a great surprise!

I was so into the Grail quest books I bought a hardcover whilst on vacation in California.. I think it was $35!

I can also vouch for the Hannibal book by David Anthony Durham.

I'm a big Cornwell fan. I love Sharpe and the Viking invasion series. I also like Patrick O Brian. I love Jack Aubrey. Also Steven Pressfield. Virtues of War, the Afghan Campaign and Gates of Fire are all awesome books about ancient Greece. I recently bought the Eagles Conquest by Simon Scarrow but Macro hasn't really sucked me in quite yet.

For the Carthaginian fans here, I recommend a book called Hannibal - Pride of Carthage by David Anthony Durham. Good book and very well written.

Other than that, Iggulden is a favourite - his Rome books and his Genghis Khan ones are good.

Only dream I ever have. Is it the surface of the Sun?
