What amazing work you guys have going on here! Magnificent!

A silly little question from me:

Did the Emperor and his Heir truly have the dikephalos on their cape and boots?

Indeed. From what the others have told me, the boots were pretty much standard wear for the emperors. For an example, do a google search for the famous statue of Constantine XI (the last Byzantine emperor) and check out the boots he's wearing.

You mean the one in my avatar, from a picture of me standing next to it?

In any case, that statue is anachronistic. It just seems a bit odd to have had it displayed so prominently.

Blue was the colour of the Komnenean dynasty

Well that was just an example. Like I said the others assured me that the boots were a prominent feature of the emperor's equipment.

Oddly when I was in Athens last year, I noticed it for the very first time, which is odd considering how often I am at Monastiraki.

Well I trust in their better judgment of course, it just seems that I remember in a certain Osprey book there were no eagles (then again it was before the Komnenids). As far as the statue of Constantine XI is concerned, I'm not sure how much I'd trust the eagle because of the fact that he has become a religious symbol, and the desire of the Orthodox Church to both get its hands on some of his legacy and by associating itself even more closely to the Byzantines. Anywho...

Komnneans were the 1st dynasty that adopted the doubled head eagle on the banners(on the top of the banner's spear)and on some imperial insignias!
This is the version of the Komnenean dynasty eagle!

Basileios II Bulgaroctonus still used the clasic aquilla!

Aye, I've been made aware of that from looking forever trying to find an "accurate" Byzantine flag...

...but does that mean it would have also gone on their cape and boots?

According to Pompeius Magnus research the "personal"banner of most of the Komneneans was a tripled striped flag with a simple white cross and(maybe)the words ΤΟΥ ΤΟ
    .......................... ΝΙ ΚΑ!
As for the boots..yes it was one of the standard equipment of the Emperor him self!!!
No one else had the right to whear such boots! As for the cloak symbol the XP caushed us some trouble and we didn't want to have it just with anything on it!

Oh I thought the only thing special about the emperor's boots was that they were purple.

In any case, and this is just my opinion, the cape would look better without anything on it...but that's just me.

How could I not? They are such excellent models and skins. That goes without saying for all the soldiers you guys have made!

edit: Actually, you've revived my interest in Byzantine heraldry, so after I'm done searching, it's off to the library!
