Default Higher Gas Prices = Less Fat People?

With so many people changing their ways of life in order to cope, would this mean a decrease in some diseases, like heart disease, and less obesity related ailments?

Or would stress fill that void?

I ask because there are always some good things that can be gleamed from every bad thing, so maybe this would work.

... Yeah, it probably would. If people used cars for long distance travel, and used bikes for just going to work and the store, it'd prolly be fantastic. Less accidents too.

I doubt it. Higher gas prices means that the working poor will have even less money to buy healthy food like fresh fruits and vegetables and less spare time to cook at home (meaning more McDonald's meals)

A lot of people don't have many choices when it comes to transportation, and high gas prices just mean they pay more. However, it does lead to more people buying more efficient cars.

Should prices become unbearable to the point where many people are forced to use other methods of transportation, the economy will have collapsed.

ya, this is kinda the way I see it too.

Also, America is not exactly pedestrian friendly, and even if you wanted to walk to the grocery store or wherever, it isn't exactly an easy task.

Depends on where, In the cities yes, Higher gas prices will give more an incentiv e for people to use public transportation which is readily available. However in the Suburbs and rural areas, people will simply have to cope with the prices at the pump. Myself personally ( I live in Levittown which is the Quintessential American Suburb), I don't mind taking the bus but there is a bit of a stigma about it.

USA was built around cheap oil. Fact. Mass transportation (train) was completely abolished when the Ford T-model was stepped into the scene.

= We are still there, with the exception of there isn't cheap oil anymore.

Beside the large metropolis areas, walkways, train stations "bike roads" are rare or places I live, non-existent. This is what Euro-people need to understand. We do not have a sophisticated bus rounds, trains and metros, forget about what you see in the movies, showing New York City or L.A.

United States operates like the cheap oil being its main artery and without, the entire place collapses like a playing card tower. So far, the alternatives proposed for the solution are weak and/or stupid and its hitting too soon and too fast, people can't cope with the changes.
One thing I feel favorable though...getting rid of the cars from the big cities! Enough is enough, NYC has subways and more trains and buses than any place and everything is 2 minute walk away down the road and yet these people still running around with SUVs, and it maddens me beyond comfort.
Please you dumb town-people, leave the SUVs for us village people, it comes from us and it is not made to wear 22 inch chrome wheels and it supposed to be used as a "utility" vehicle, not a luxury transportation!!!

Here is an SUV used for its purpose:

Here is a "pickup" truck used for its purpose:

I think I have said it repeatedly to many people to rebuild the mass-transit systems ! NOT one candidate ever thought of this of having trains (even electric) running again, more sophisticated and modern. Hell, let's build some magnetic tracks or whatever, give airlifts or something, but let's start making alternatives that could work, instead of making ethanol from food or trying to make people buy 60,000 dollar " enviro-friendly" prototypes, people just can't afford this crap !

higher gas prices = less idiots driving supercharged pick-up trucks and hummers that take two parking spaces (because they need to compensate for the size of something else I suppose) = good thing.

I hope they will pass a law that heavily taxes everything that makes less than 25 MPG.

While they're at it, why not pass a law that heavily taxes people who use tvs and computers as well?
