    Default unorthodox strategies

One of the unorthodox strategies i like to use and am currently using now, is massing wardogs.
    Pro's:
    1. they are cheap
    2. they are like peasants but stronger
    3. they move faster than avg infantry
    4. dead dogs dont count as casulties, and if u still have the same number of handlers remaining, then all of the dogs that have died will be replenished
    Con's:
    1. once u release them on the enemy, ur not gonna be able to control them
    2. if they run off the battlefield u dont get them back
    3. if they make up 3/4 of ur army, ur so boned
This strategy works well against infantry, particularly the rear and flanks of slower moving hoplites. they even work well against horsemen.
They swarm around a single man and kill it, like the ants in indiana jones...
do not send release them upon chariots... for they will only be ran over.

    Unorthodox tactic: I use scythia.

    Lmao!

My favourite is hiding my entier army in the forests with my general just behind it all, the general wont hide so the enemy (only works vs AI, humans aren't usually so stupid) charges him and hit your main force not expecting it, you can then easily surround them and slaughter them.

Another is putting phalanx on the flanks facing 45 degrees outwards. Enemy (AI only again) don't flank successfully ever against this!

Another unorthodox tactic: the happy smiley formation.

Hmmmm.... This intrigues me.... Have you ever actually tried this or was it just a joke? because I feel an idea coming on (so be afraid!)

I once spawned an army with nothing but armored elephants, just to see how far conquer without retraining. Starting from Egypt I made it all the way up to Turkey conquering.

Well, I have never tried it but it is not a joke. There are a number of screenshots on TWC about it, I'll dig them up.
This is a quote from Prince of Macedon, from the thread "Equites best cavunit in game"
It's really hard to say. It happened so fast!

He told me he was going to use the Smiling Face Formation 2.4 against me. So I started to attack the "mouth" segment (composed of Town Watch), and that's when the Smiling Face turned into the Frowning Face. At that point, I was doomed!

I managed to take this screenshot of his Smiling Face Formation 2.4 prior to the battle:

I didn't get to save the replay because I was sooooo angry!

Oh wow! I thought it'd be more like this:

    - -
    O _____ O
    \____/

    1st line - Archers
2nd line - Cavalry on flanks, line of infantry with javelins/pilla
    3rd line - Phalanx

but that's still fair cool! +rep for rooting it out for me!

It's (apparently) a strategy made by someone named Mutiani, but I can't say for sure since I have never met him or seen his tactics.

I'm not nazi, but i tried the SWASTIKA formation...Pretty effective actually...Once the enemy is inside one of the open parts of your swastika, just start closing it...

That's an interesting one. I suppose all of the swastika's arms face inward then.

There's lots of interesting tactics in the DarthMod forum

It isn't all that unorthodox but... Mega rush(6 full stacks) of nothing else than peasants trying to conquer a greek town with a full stack garrison. Hundreds upon hundreds of filthy pig-farmers throwing their unwashed, stinking selves upon the greek phalanxes wave after wave after wave... I eventually(after a few battles) won the city, but with huge casualties.

Gotta try the smiley face formation someday, it looks like fun.

The trick is to use crappy troops; otherwise, the smiley face is a mere facade

Also, it has to be an online battle because nobody cares how badly you can beat the computer.

For this battle, the Smile Face consists of:
    - 2 Incendiary Pigs (including the general)
    - 6 Town Watch
    - 6 Equites
    - 2 Roman Archers

    The Seleucid player uses:
    - 2 Armoured Elephants
    - 4 Silver Shield Pikemen
    - 4 Archers

Note that it consists of only low-grade troops. Townwatch, archers, pigs, equites etc. You'll need to watch out if you don't want to get kicked in the face with it

Hmmm.... but what happens if you use super urban cohorts? or spartans? It would be invinsible!

If you remember the James Bond movie where the bad guy said that at the end, you will know how you will end up.

Boris? I'll end up frozen? NA! I am the mighty Stu! Those things only happen to mortals and James Bond characters!

But if I used mega dudes I could get a better win than that one.... In theory anyway, guess it all depends on who I'm tryin to kill!

also on my wardog tactic... it doesnt work that well against chariots unless u hit them when they r unexpected and if u have a whole army of them ur screwed.
also dont send them straight into a phalanx, its like sending peasants to kill spartans...
Peasants Vs Spartans = FUN!!! There's a vid on youtube of 1 unit of spartans Vs a full army of peasants and winning. Whats better is armoured elephants Vs peasants! Those smelly people can't possibly defeat a huge grey thing with a funny nose and 2 big white horns sticking out of its face!

It wouldn't be unorthodox if you used top-of-the-line troops. And this thread is about being unorthodox.
