Now we know why there are so many religious people, they are all drugged!

A new mobile phone tower went up in a town in the USA, and the local newspaper asked a number of people what they thought of it. Some said they noticed their cellphone reception was better. Some said they noticed the tower was affecting their health.
A local administrator was asked to comment. He nodded sagely, and said simply: "Wow. And think about how much more pronounced these effects will be once the tower is actually operational."
very interesting article, and basically we can assume some sort of chemistry is at work any time we interact with smells especially.
inhalation of psycho actives is a tradition as old as humanity.
Oliver Sachs book - guy got coked and started seeing like a dog - smell became dominant. Smell became colour. We are sight-dominant.
Not too much, but it triggered something and for some time smell became his dominant sense. He could smell when women were having periods, when men were horny etc. When it went away, he felt like he had lost something quite significant.
Stephen was a medical student who used PCP, cocaine and amphetamines. Stephen, after having dreamt he was a dog, upon awakening (theres that word again), discovered he had a super-keen sense of smell. He also noticed an increased impulse to touch everything. Three weeks later he returned to normal but felt he had experienced a loss at returning to normal. Sixteen years later after never having had similar episodes, he admitted to wishing he could go back to that dog-world on occasion. I would have put this story under Losses since Stephen felt a sense of loss when he lost his keener sense of smell.
I had a chemistry teacher who would burn incense during tests. I wonder if that helped at all with anxiety there.
boeing I hate to tell you this mate, but if you thought you were seeing helicopters follow you after coke, you were doing meth not coke. coke jjust makes you feel lke everyones best buddy and you get friendly, dont do drugs and stay in school
but the only way to know for sure is if you stayed high for 2 hours as opposed to 6-72

12 pages in and the topic's changed drastically. Is that a new record? No surprise on the incense front, in a Hindu family you feel a lot of... strangely relaxing thoughts when there's agarbati around.
yah good movie, good reference--- the art of forum posting is the art of being off topic

umm... pass the bong, I mean sandalwood!
Drugs and religion have always been closely linked in history. I guess we've forgotten the use of peyote, cannabis or fly agaric by indigenous peoples in their rituals. It's no small stretch that some form of it worked it's way into mainstream religions as well. Even if we're not aware of it.
And why is this on a forum about science?
Or because it is a scientific explanation for the popularity of religion and mroe importantly a way in which religion, the ultimate meme system, takes hold.

The problem with the artificial scientific solutions is the ammount. To drug somebody you need a dose. Even if it has a drug in its complex compound, you will most probably need a sufficient dose to be drug induced. Likewise the arsenic in a single almond won't kill you. And a pinch of incense spread in a space of =10 buses will be equall to nothing. Like one cigarette smoked by 200 people.Under the influence of a good snoot full of incense, mice in scary situations, such as being put in a swimming pool, remain calm, anxiety-free. At the alter, too, people feel the same sense of peace that comes from either the comforting words of the clergy, or from the intoxicating, brain altering, smell of incense.
