WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Food and Drug Administration on Friday warned women not to use or purchase Mommy's Bliss Nipple Cream, marketed by MOM Enterprises Inc. of San Rafael, California.

The cream, promoted to nursing mothers to help soothe dry or cracked nipples, contains ingredients that may cause respiratory distress, vomiting and diarrhea in infants, the agency said.

The potentially harmful ingredients in the cream are chlorphenesin and phenoxyethanol.

"FDA is particularly concerned that nursing infants are being unwittingly exposed by their mothers to this product with dangerous side effects," said Janet Woodcock, director of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. "Additionally, these two ingredients may interact with one another to further compound and increase the risk of respiratory depression in nursing infants."

The company has stopped selling the cream. The FDA said consumers should stop using the cream and consult a doctor if they experience problems or believe that their infant may have experienced problems due to the product.

Mothers whose children may have suffered adverse effects because of this product should contact the FDA's MedWatch at 800-332-1088.

Not really, as far as I know - that is. Most things are tested by the company to prevent lawsuits, the FDA only really comes involved when there is a problem. Most items aren't tested by the government because they couldn't do it on the kind of budget they get.

IIRC the cream in the article was made using over the counter ingredients, which are deemed 'safe enough' to be used with little supervision. therefore, it wasn't a problem till someone found out about the negative effects and let the FDA know - which then did its job and shut down the sale and production of the substance.

If the cream was used in any other manner, it would've been fine, since you wouldn't be ingesting it. The problem came when it was made into a nipple cream where babies would ingest some of the remnants.

the FDA are not the one's directly responsible for testing all products. and there are many products that dont require testing. That is y many people warn against the use of herbal remedies, because they dont have to pass inspection by the FDA. in any case, it first comes down to the producer to test the products. the FDA would actually be less efficient then it is now.

and the snake oil industry is not totally dead, check out Super-Thrive. the product actually works, but it has the funniest packaging. (the the plant hormone that helped win World War II!)

The FDA has ducked ruling on fluoride for some reason. Fluoride has been used her in places since the 1040's. And is still in some products, and used by some municipalities water supplies.

Ultimately will this product be helpful or harmful to the children taking it today? We don't really know, do we.

That the FDA approves things that don't always turn out well is well known. They also don't evaluate every product since they may lie outside of the FDA's jurisdiction. Yet they have expert scientists working on these matters. They are not perfect in predicting the future however. And inferring that the Chinese do not need any regulations on such matters is irresponsible.

They do their best, and scientists and ethicists are best qualified to judge the outcomes. Both short term and long term.

Much is infered from very little that is written. Naturally biased much?

I didn't draw a direct analogy between the two products.

I was commenting on how the FDA process works, or how the FDA process doesn't work for us on occasion. Us being the taxpayers in the US.

Why would they want to sever relations with one of their biggest trade partners? Out of all the stuff they send us, of course there will be a few defective products...we can't expect every product to be 100% error free.
