    Default legionaries in testudo

Someone(I don't remember who)told me that sending a legionarie cohort(in testudo)to the enemys back to march throgh the enemy is a way to do an attacking with a legion in testudo(otherwise they don't stay in testudo).Yes its a good way, altough some of my legions after a time disactivated the testudo. The problem is that its hard to do this, and I found wery effective that a legionarie cohort fights in testudo:I fought with 10 legionaries 7 auxillia(not light)2 roman cavalry ant 1 general. The enemy had 3 belgae swordsman 7 gallic swordsman 6 spearmen.I lost just 175 soldiers. So is it possible to make that even if I click to attack the enemy the legion attacks it but remains in testudo. If not ,than it is no problem ,but if it is possible that would be great.

hmmm this would be kind of un-realistic, don't you think? It was basically used just to stop arrows. Well, whatever you want you can do, its your save

I almost never use testudo except against horse archer armies etc...I find it takes them too long to go back in and out formation.

Testudo is vital in my tactics on to beat horse archer based armies.

Yeah I took Testudo out a while ago and added shield wall. I find it works much better against most other armies. The Phalanxs are undone by it because I can get man to man with them.

Well I found wery usefull, and I saw this testudo formation in some books where it writed that "romans in there war formation"(example:a picture and above it that what I wrote). And if they fought hand to hand with infantry and they recuived arrows than this tactic would be usefull.
Well if they fought like this or not.....it dosen't matter,if it is possible(example in the unit dscription)i would make it.

i only use testude (doesn't matter what mod) if my enemy has a lot of archers/horse archers or also when i'm under fire advancing to city walls.

for anything else it's pretty much useless. don't try to hold your line in testudo formation, you make no advances because you can't really attack enemies.

I find fighting in testudo usefull and I tink its historical. Is it possible to make it that they stay in testudo once engaged or once I attacked an enemy,or it is not possible.I would thank him,who could tell me how is it possible(if possible),because I don't know modding.

If you put defensive mode on, while in a testudo formation, you can attack while in testudo.

I wish I could have testudo and shield wall with the romans, maybe something with loose formation button could be done, but I don't know what actually shield wall does(just the tightness of the formation or something more :hmmm

I beleive that is possible with the loose formation button. So you can have shield wall and testudo. The shield wall is great when fighting barbarians. Your line is shorter but you can hold the line FOREVER

I tried putting guard mode on.Even if I click behind the enemy so the legions try to brake the line of the enemy, disable the testudo.Thats why I asked that it is possible to make it with a script or something.

i was thinking about this the other day - whether it was possible to give units two different special abilities - because in M2TW:K, the Trebuchet has the option of firing Stones, fireballs, or disease-bearing cow-carcasses - you just toggle through them. i was wondering if it could be done
Normal formation--->shieldwall---> testudo---> back to normal again etc.

It worked for me torzsoktamas, when I entered the testudo while in guard mode and attacked legionaires stayed in formation, and only stabbed the opponents in range

Yeah century, I thought that if I entered smaller numbers instead of larger for loose formation button, then I could have shield wall

I don't know if it's possible rory, but it would be very fun

    what does shield_wall do?
i tried carthage's sacred band (they have shield_wall ability in the EDU) in a custom battle, i didn't see anything different with other spear wielding units, and there was no shield wall icon.
