    Default Playing Papal states

Hi there people, I have a question. I have recently meddled with the files and am now able to play the papal states. As I am now at my mother's house I can't play MTWII, and i am wondering how the crusades system is, and whether i am able to excommunicate other factions etc. I doubt that myself as I think the devs did not intend for anyone to play them, so they haven't included things like that. I'd like to hear from you though, as I cannot be sure myself.

    Thanks in Advance

You can excommunicate other catholics by going to war with them. If you attack them, they will immediately get excommunicated. You can also control inquisitioners who pop up, but IIRC you cannot recruit them. Other than that, there are no extra features that I can think of.

I think you are also unable to call for crusades yourself if I'm not mistaken (and if I don't mix that up with M1TW somehow). Apart from that, you also get access to the faction-unique units of Papal Guards and Swiss Guard (quite good spearmen and halberdiers).

If you excommunicate them, offer them reconciliation back for a city or two...

You can't control the pope. You can move him around but you can't control his decisions like who to excommunicate, who to reconcile and to start a crusade.
Officer to a soldier who refuses to fight: There three types of soldiers who don't have to fight. They are called KIA, MIA and POW and you are not one of them.

    Tosa will be missed.

I played as the Papal states, and I must disagree with you.

As said, you excommunicate whoever you go to war with (which also opens them up to every other catholic faction )

And you can go to them with diplomacy, and you can offer to reconcile them; I've done several times.

But the crusade thing is also true, you can't do that. But you can control Inquisitors.
