    eks.

when one of my legions is down in numbers do you take the whole legion back to the city you raised it in. or do you just buy some new cohords and bring it to the legions.

and you don't mix legions right?

I Let the Legions go as they are for the campain but once it is over I will take them home for a refitting. If Im really low I just give them Auxillia or mercs

Legions can be mixed - very often, emperors would not take more than one or two whole legions with them on campaign, but simply accept detachments of a few others from other legions around the empire - these were called Vexillations, because they marched under the Vexillum - a square flag with the legion's name and number on it - if you play by RS house rules, you can justify having a couple of cohorts from another legion in your army, as long as you don't have more than 9 cohorts and 1 first cohort of each NAMED legion in existence at the time (actually, we allow for reinforcements to be brought as cohorts, as reinforcements were often shipped to their legions from the home recruiting grounds).

I normally have 1-2 extra cohorts follow the main legion along with auxillia legions to provide support. This means that the legion can campaign for much longer and even if it sustains losses, will still be able to fight for the foreseeable future

I have only 8 cohorts in the main stack, and the other 2 cohorts in the backup stack of the legion. Really helps keeping the legion in the field longer.

I also don't reinforce numbered legions before the Imperial Reforms. I just have them campaign until they're withered down to below a level where they're actually useful in combat, then I disband them, use them as garrison forces or merge them with another depleted legion, and simply raise a new legion. That's how Ceasar and his mates probably did it, anyway.

After the Augusterian/Imperial Reforms, I normally don't reinforce legions until after a specific campaign (say, conquest of Dacia), but then it's simply a matter of moving some new cohorts from their parent city to the legion - I don't pull out entire legions, leaving my borders undefended - to get reinforcements. That would be quite unhistorical.

I always bring them back and retrain them, there's a greater chance they will keep their experience in my opinion.
