Default I know not Mauryans but...

How about a smaller Indian tribe like the Gandhara or Kamboja? They were certainly known to gice Baktrians and the like alot of trouble but also Alexander noted the Kamnoja's fearsome fighting reputation. It would be cool also due to the fact that they would be the games only Hindu faction. Just an idea is all.

that would class with culture/religion as there are only 7 slots available and all have been taken already.

The culture problem is still a problem even if there isn't a faction in India. Since part of India is shown on the EB map, there still is a culture problem. Even if it rebel it doesn't really match any of the factions in EB, and is currently a problem in EB1...

The problem though is that it would probably be more Buddhist than Hindu. Asoka came to the throne a year before the game starts. How many highborne and high-ranking Mauryan officials, officers and administrators were actually Buddhist I don't know, but logically we can assume most would embrace Buddhism in some fashion to gain support from Asoka. Also by what I remember the brahmin were probably the most vocal opponents of Asoka too from what I remember, because their power got weakened during his reign. I remember the professor at the Indian studies I attended saying Asoka only became famous later, apparently because when the Mauryan empire was toppled the brahmin tried to remove most traces of Asoka ever existing.
