Direct3d problems

Hey all,

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced the following or could help.
Basically, whenever I start a total war game I now get a message saying
"Unable to initialize direct3D. PLease ensure your machine meets the minimum graphics acceleration specification and retry" Now Im pretty sure it DOES as Ive played all the TW games on this machine before, and Ive run DXdiag, and it tells me direct3d is enabled and so on. Admittedly, I have 0 ech skills, but from what little I know, if it ran once I dont see why it doesnt now-cant for the life of me think what Ive done to cause this. The only significant thing ive done since I last played any of the games was install steam.

You answered your own question: steam. If you want want steam, tou're going to have to uninstall and reinstall RTW so it can find it.

Well I did do-thats the thing. Is there a specific method you have to go through to make sure everythings gone? Also, its not just Rome its all the games from eras that are effected by this.

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling Directx? Have you tried uninstalling Steam to see if it works, again?

Yeah Ive tried reinstalling Direct x a few times. Havent tried that with steam though. Hmm. Would all the games I bought with steam still be there if I did that?

I should point out I didnt play total war through steam, I had the retail copy well before that.

I don't know that much about steam but when you installed it, it wiped out/hijacked part of the RTW registry for itself assuming you're going to use it. If you're worried about losing the games with steam, backup your registry, have on hand all your license keys just in case, rename steam something it can't find but you'll remember and then try it.
