    Default Getting Multiplayer to Work

My deep apologies for posting this question on the general BC forums instead of the Tech Help one, but I didn't get a response yet, less than 11 views (3 of which are mine), so I'm appealing to the broader viewership. If I'm posting out of line, please tell me, and then we can discuss deleting/moving this post to Tech Help or to the main M2:TW forums.

I have always been a single player Total War player ever since the pre-release of the Shogun TW demo in 2000, through M2 and BC. A week ago I got into contact with a friend who bought M2, and having had several conversations on Total War, I proposed starting a few online matches for practice and fun.

This is when I clicked on the Multiplayer button for the very first time - and faced two options, LAN and online, but online is allowed only via the services of Gamespy.

So both of us take time off to start Gamespy accounts - in six minutes, good and done. Then we try to enter our account information and log in - 1. I get a frozen screen when I hit the enter button, unable to Alt-Tab, Ctrl-Alt-Delete or Alt-F4 so I have to force shut down my computer and turn it back on. My friend on the other hand got 2. "wrong CD key" message, so after another twenty minutes of searching online I find a helpful thread - where we have to reenter our CD key making sure everything is capitalized.

As for me, I lost my original program box somewhere (so that's that for now). My friend reentered his CD key, but he still got the error message.

At that, I did a search on the TW Forums and got complaints about problems on the behalf of Gamespy. At the same time I go into the Multiplayer section of the BC forums and see lots of players happily having access to Multiplayer. Can I get any tips or help for this area?

I dont know what is wrong, but that freeze you had happened to me too, I think it was because of the virus program blocking it, and I could not go on the desktop, but after 4 restarts it worked, and I allowed the program to access internet, and everythig went well, what happened to your freind I cant help you.

I think that your friend typed his key code in wrong when he installed the game. If I remember correctly, then the installation will go on anyway even if u type it wrong but u wont be able to go online.

EDIT: didnt read the last part at first, anyway u sure that he did it right? the 0 and O look nearly the same on the manual and I guess that it might be the same for some other letters and numbers.

Problem is, the friend is in another state. We can't set up LAN games. Thus is the age in which we can make friends with people across the world just as easily as next door...

Use hamachi, it's a program that sets up an online network, allowing you to play with the LAN feature over the internet.

Thank you much! Out of curiosity, is this what you use, and what other people use for that matter? LAN over the internet?

The bad thing with hamachi is that there are many servers, instead of concentrated on one, which sucks so I dont know what's used mst, but I play innternet, not LAN.

It's good if you want to do small scale with friends though, or Co-op modes.
