Good Day,

I think a thread like this went up some time ago, but I was wondering wether or not people around here would consider taking RS to a multiplayer level more permanantly. I admit that many people will be thinking, Multiplayer? pah! whats the point? I thought the same as you but then I tried IBFD multiplayer for the first time, and believe me, IT ROCKED! as long as players stick to loose house rules, the multiplayer experience can be so much more fun and rewarding than Vanilla is online. Imagine recreating the battle of Teutoberg forest, or the battle of Zama online! I assure you, its excellent fun, and contrary to poular belief, quite easy to set up, so what say you? Would you guys be willing to take RS online? or am I just wasting my energy?

Give me a month until exams are over and I'd be happy to give you all a good thrashing! I'm certainly up for it and wouldn't mind helping to get the ball rolling either, if you need help spreading the word or anything.

Firstly, the problem of incompatability needs to be addressed, but other than that it would be great.

Well Mulatto and I tried a while back to get it working in MP, but to no avail - after many fresh installs and error messages, we gave up. If you can get it working reliably online, then I'll play, but good luck getting it working.

Well, I've played it over LAN before using a couple of new installs and the same .exe, I think it was Romans versus Parthia with a freind who had never played a RTW mod before. Excellent fun, not to mention your opponent uses the testudo properly.

In theory then, what you need is a clean install, and both need to be running on the same .exe. Then you simply host your game in the RTW gaming Lobbies, and other RS players will be able to join in. You need to make sure that if either of you have expansions like alex and BI, not to get any of their files in the new install, as this is a main problem. If anyone is willing to give it a try, PM me and we can work something out. If all is succesful I'll do a mini AAR about it so you guys can see what it's like.

Same as me.
If we can get it working properly we should set up a tournament.

Do any of you guys have x fire? that would make multiplayering much easier

I don't have Xfire, but I've seen it done on the normal lobby. After all NTW2 use the normal lobby system, and their mod is based soley on multiplayer!

Edit: Right, well If I can get a game working with somone who is willing, we can start setting up tournaments and stuff. Who knows, maybe we can get a multiplayer section on the RS wiki?

I think the main problem with not just RS multiplayer but almost all mod multiplayer, is that the players need to have almost exactly the same data files to work, otherwise the games show up with "not compatible game data".

I would be interested with playing against serious players who are interested in a a whole campaign, and could dedicate x number of hours per day/week to play.

Is it even possible to play RS in multiplayer, as in camapgin and battle maps live?

no

x fire is useful to arrange matches and you can see if people are online

Actually you can pause, but both players need to hit the pause button to allow it.

All players involved must be using the map.rwm file or the games aren't compatible. Have one person send their map.rwm file to everyone else who wants to take part and see if that works.
