Increased Performance for nVidia gfx cards

I know this may seem obvious to some, but I have been plying RTR for several years and suffered from slow screen rates.

I stumbled accross this the other day and its made a huge dfference to my game.

I have Windows XP

Go to control Panel, then Performance and Maintenance
Then the NVIDIa Control Panel
Change "Use my prefernce emphasising" and set the slider bar to Performance.


Then try RTR again.

For Vista: (Home Basic)
with a NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GS

- Go to desktop
- rightclick
- select "NVIDIA Control Panel"
- if a window pups-up: Select "Advanced"
- Choose "3D-Configurations"
- Choose "Edit setting with a 3D example"
- Select the dot with the performance/quality bar
- Move it to performance
- Save your changes

Btw, if the performance went up, what happened to the graphics? Any easily detectable downgrade?

I didnt really notice any difference in quality as my settings are quite average as Im playing on a laptop. Besides, I had all the GFX stuff like vegetation turned down.
I do however play on huge unit size.
I had always suffered from the mouse never responding quickly enough and screen lag/freezing when there were a large number of units on screen. Also arrow fire seemed to slow things down or if I zoomed in on units.

All this has disappeared since I adjusted the NVIDIA settings. Although I havent turned the GFX stuff back up.

If you turn the NVIDIA quality one down (to "balance") and then turn the game quality a little up... I think it looks better

If you want better quality... just increase the screen resolution to as high as possible, so you wouldn't notice the "downgrades"

I've been playing with the 'Manage 3D settings' and setting specific settings for each game.

I do have a decent processor, memory and a 8800GTX 768MB card..... I play at 1920x1200 resolution.

I paid just under £2.5K for my Dell XPS710 desktop - it didn't come with a screen as I had already bought my 24" widescreen previously. Not cheap but it will be good for several years at least.

Wow... That's a lot of money... I jsut payed €1.2K for my lappie with a 8200 GS (or something like that) and 3 GB RAM...

How much RAM do you have? 4GB? With Vista you can have 8GB, right? Do you have that? That would really be the best PC currently available!

I think he has 4 Gigs yes. But obviously the very very best of the market for now would be an SLi system of 2 nVidia 9800 GTX or something like that...

I couldnt comment on ATI Cards, although I would imagine its possible

I kind of found this by accident. However I know from previous experience, some people will assume that everyone knows this kind of stuff.

I find that if you share this type of info, someone out there (like me) probably didnt even know it was possible.

It may have been 'ATI Tray Tools' which I appear to have found at this site; http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=733

I'd suggest putting in 'ATI Tray Tools' in google and having a read on the various user forums for information (and feedback) on this tool.

I don't remember where I first read about this tool but someone had posted about it with a lot of useful information - it was a year or so ago. I did use it for a period of time until I upgraded to a new desktop (the 8800GTX was a lot better than the ATI cards on offer - I'd been an ATI user since I stopped using 3dfx cards).

I know already this software, but I use it to upgrading quality in old games, like X-Wing Alliance for example...

The problem with Ati Tray Tools is you can't use it to play mod, because you can't change the command line, Ati Tray will lanch automatically the vanilla game.

Good luck gaming on the highest settings. Can you max out CrYsis at 1920*1200 at DX10 without lag?

The OPs winXP fix worked wonders for me. Thanks Clearchus! It seems to have fixed BSOD problems I was having in other apps as well. Previously I had the slider set on quality (no idea why). Thanks!
