The referrence may be to 'Legio IV Flavia Felix', which was a real Legion. There was no 'III Felix'.

AYe I've wondered myself but I do believe it was Flavia Felix

Maximus says he's commander of the Felix legions but there was only one such legion, IV Flavia Felix, as DVK said

As the 'subtractive' form of Roman numerals was not yet used in ~180AD (when Gladiator is set), it could be that it was IIII Felix? If it definitely is III, there are the following known Legio of that number:
III Gallica (~48 BC)
III Augusta (~43 BC)
III Cyrenaica (36 BC)
III Italica (165 AD)
III Parthica (197 AD)
IIII Flavia Felix was established ~ 70 AD and not sharing 'Felix' but rather 'Flavia' (Flavian) is Legio XVI Flavia Firma, also established in 70 AD by Vespasian. If he'd said "commander of the Flavian legions" - that might have worked. Eexcepting they weren't stationed in Germania either! Ah well - Hollywood!

Errr, gladiator is set in 180 AD, at the end of the reign of Marcus Aurelius... Commodus ascends to the throne. the legionnaires have lorica segmentata - this means it must at least be the beginning of the first century AD. i will also point out that that battle is based on M. Aurelius's campaigns across the Danube against the Marcomanni and Quadi.

I always thought III Italica are the ones in Gladiator, or near enough, as it mentions them fighting for Aurelius on his Campaigns in germany in the 2nd Century AD in their unit description...or am I wrong??

Here is the actual quote
“My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, Commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.”

The best Film ever. I've watch both so many times, but I have to make one point. The fight between the tow in Tory. Out standing. Forgive me if for get the name of the two.
Has anyone seen the scene in Kingdom of Heaven when they ride out to meet the oncoming hordes and get surrounded? Pretty spectacular
The LOTR scene at the gates of mordor, with Aragorn's speech is pretty good as well
