    Default sieging help

i was laying siege to a a city with two battering rams and a couple of ladders
both battering rams were destroyed by the tower arrows. THose on the ladders got in the city but were all killed
The rest of my army is stuck outside. Is there anyway I can still get in the city or is my only option to exit battle?

You have a certain mentality, a "you vs them" and i know it is hard to see, but it is only your imagination which makes up enemies everywhere. I haven't professed anything but being neutral so why Do you feel the need to defend yourself from me?. Truly What are you defending? when there is nobody attacking?

You need three rams each manned by a cheap, expendable light-infantry unit - one of them will reach the gate. You should also dissipate enemy archer fire by spreading skirmishers in front of the wall in loose formation as well.

I stopped using the ram all together and now just mine the walls in a couple places, which allows direct charges. I make a couple ladders in case I need to scale the walls from the outside, but find I never need to use them.

Use towers, I usually use 3 towers while assulting cities.

Yes, towers are most useful, but costly to build. I use ladders when I have a smaller army or not so many build points. Against stone walls, ram is only useful as a decoy, to avert fire arrows from towers; even if you break through the gate, you still lose too many men to boiling oil.

You take weak units with you to do the ramming itself - expendable fools to be burned by the oil before the real soldiers actually go through the gate. Persian Infantry, Warbands, Town Watch, Militia, etc. It is of no consequence if a few non-entities fall.

But towers are too vulnerable to being burned by enemy archers, because they have to stand up against the wall while the troops mount the ladders for far too long. While they're at it archer units can be peppering them, and then it finally catches fire while your assault unit is half-way ready - and they're massacred when it collapses.

When you attack city with stone wall use just ladders and towers. And use your skirmishers to distract fire from defenders. Most of your infantry should make to the top of walls. Try to position you siege equipment that you will be able to create local superiority. Then take towers as fast as you can. Now those superarchers in towers will start to kill enemy units below. Join in your skirmishers and half of enemy army should be destroyed before you even put your main force in action.

against stone walls never use rams imo. towers and saps are the best way to go.

If you get in the city, and get a unit of your troops to walk up the gateway tower onto the rampart at the top, then the gateway is yours and you can open it for your other troops to get through. As for ladders, once they are put on the walls, you can get as many troops to get on them as you like. They're not one time use.

Xavier Dragnesi told you loud and clear.
Scale the walls and then have your unit on wall walk over gatehouse. You will get message coming down left on your screen, telling you that you captured gatehouse, Then you can move you cavalry in town through doors.
I recommend you to capture towers too, their arrows can wipe out whole units.

One thing I recently notice, even on towns with wooden palisades, is missile fire from the wall towers even if none of the units inside are missile units! Gotta keep the approaching infantry away from the wall towers - and approaching the inner angle of a wall with a ram never makes it. Anyone know more about this unexpected resistance?

PS. Just had another experience with phantom archers, this time to my benefit. Holding Rome against the Scipii, I waited inside the walls while reinforcements approached. Rather than scurry to one side of the field like the Romans usually do, the Scipii army croweded the gate, waiting for my general's army to emerge. I waited, then heard the familiar "They're attacking us" - and sure enough, the enemy cohorts close to the tower gates were getting decimated by missile fire. By the time I emerged, at least two enemy cohorts were completely destroyed, making it much easier to sally out.
