Default [Britannia AAR] The Lion of Norway

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum and after reading a few AAR's, I thought I'd have a shot at it my self, so here goes. (feeback much appriciated!)

    The Lion of Norway

“The strongest man in the world is he who stands most alone”

An old King sits upon his throne in a great hall, standards gentley flap as a cold wind breezes through, the King rests his weary head in his head, Norway sits on the edge of a golden age, it has become a power in the Scandinavian Peninsula, only eighteen years ago in 1240AD did King Hakon Hakonsson finally win the civil war against his father-in-law and the most powerful noble in the land Skule Bardsson.

Those days still haunt the king, deep in thought he remembers when in Nidaros had Skule declared himself King, after years of war which nearly ripped Norway to pieces, a great victory did Hakon win which ended the civil war but the fate of Skule is something that Hakon could never forget, Skule had been chased back in Nidaros and saught refuge inside a monestary, the king arrived and ordered the monestary sealed.

"My lord should we keep Duke Skule prisoner here?" a captain had asked, the king surveying the secene "No, Burn it!", with that the monstary was burnt down with Skule inside, the king hadn't forgotten the screams and the smell, but now he had cemented his powerbase, he son and heir Crown Prince Magnus was a skill full warrior and leader of men, a good king he would become Hakon had thought.

The oak doors to his great hall had opened and a messanger arrived, "Sire, I bring word from Prince Magnus", the king still deep in thought looked up "What? Ah, what does he say?", "Well my lord" the messanger pulled some parchements from his bag "He and his armies are ready for the invasion, all the troops and provisions are ready, he awaits your orders lord", the King stands and walks towards the messanger "Good, Good, relay the message that he is to set sail on a good wind make for northern Scotland, I want a foothold there, if I am to launch a full invasion of these Britannic isles" the messanger scribbles down his message and leaves quickly as he can.

    Summer 1258AD
The invasion of the British Isles has begun, a force under the command of Crown Prince Magnus.

As he lands he captures Kirkwall, Stornoway and Wick, the settlemants were under control by Scottish rebels and provided little resistance.

Magnus quickly moves south capturing Mull.

The march continues after capturing settlements on the Orkey
and Shetland islands and gaining a foothold on the scottish mainland Magnus captures Castle Town and makes this his Captial.

After setting up his powerbase he dispatches his commanders to the settlements, Lars Masson governs Kirkwall.

Knut Haakonsson, who supported Skule during the civil wars has been sent as an experienced advisor to Magnus but all know its a form of exile, he governs Wick.

The young and ambitious Haldor of Vikhus has been sent by his father being his only son and heir to cut his teeth and already shows promise of becoming a good leader He governs Stornoway.

    The Battle of Arran

Magnus stands at a table surveying maps of Scotland and the British Isles, he has studied these maps for hours, looking for routes into the mainland, how to cut off and isolate the scottish forces.
A guard rushes in breathing heaviliy "My lord! My lord!! I have urgent news!!", Magnus looks up "Take a breath, what is it?", the guard composes himself briefly "Arran is under attack, Captain Olaf dispatched a messanger as the Scottish forces landed.", "WHAT!!!, How did this happen!" Magnus asks furious, clearing off the table, he knows that by the time he is able to raise a force to relieve Arran's garrision it'll be to late, Arran is on its own.

"Is there no word from Magnus?" Olaf asks his lieutenants, all look at the other and not knowing what to say, Captain Olaf had been trusted with holding the garrision at Arran until more troops could be sent, his was only a small force for such a small settlement, no walls or ramparts for defence, situated on an island many thought that Arran had nothing of stratigic value. When sails were spotted on the horizen many were shocked, no word of supplies or more troops had arrived, it was until a blue banner with a white cross was seen that the garrison was called to arms, the Scottish had invaded Arran.

"The Scottish have landed!!" was the word from the watch tower, Olaf readied his men, "How many?, How many banners did you see?" he had asked the scouts, around 400 men was the tally, Olaf knew that this was going to be a fight to the death, he had only 200, he could only delay them and hope his messanger had gotten to Magnus and reinforcement were on their way.
Turning to his men "This is it lads!!! All along I had thought that being in this quite little town we would sit on our backsides and grow fat!!" a cheer went up, "But now, those Scots dogs want to come here and kick us out!! I say let them come!!" yet another cheer went up, the blood was up and they were ready, Olaf closed the visor on his helmet and positioned his men between two buildings, hoping to block them off and bottleneck them in. He had two regiments of Viking Raiders and some Archers, Olaf was in the front line, the other regiment was further back and the Archers at the rear, in the distance the marching of the Scottish army was heard, then finally they saw the first few kilted figures in the distance, they began to run and within minutes they had reached Olaf's men.

The clash of shield on shield sounded like thunder, axes bit deep into scots flesh, scotch steel sliced bone, it looked as if Olaf's plan was working, the charge had been checked.
Archers fired into the rabble from either side, Olaf with sword in hand had just killed a spearman when a arrow hit him in the shoulder, he dropped to a knee, an another spearman stepped up and plunged the tip into Olaf's stomach, Olaf feeling the blood poor from his body feel forward dead.

A shockwave went through the Norwegian forces, their captian had been killed, within miniutes they were being pushed back, the second regiment charged forward to support them, Scotch pikes joined the fray, the Scottish Captain had joined the battle with the pikemen, the raiders could see their chance for revenge for Olaf's death, surronded by spearmen and pikemen the raiders hacked with axe and battered with shield, one raider finally got close the the scots captian, as he turned the captain was met with an axe to the chest.

A cheer once again went up as the captian fell to the ground dead, axe still in his chest, the raider that had killed him had died in the act, after losing his axe a pike man had ran him through. As the battle continued the Scottish forces numbers began to show.

The Viking raiders were no match for better armoured spearmen and sheer number of pikemen, the archers fired volley after volley into the Scottish but they contiuned, finally a lone Viking stood holding the village square hacking down any enemy that came near in a frenzy.

A pile of bodies had begun to form around him but finally he was surronded and cut to ribbons, the archers were alone and fired volley after volley retreating as they went, the Scottish had won the day but had taken casulaties, Olaf's men had fought well and now joined their fathers.

    Arran was lost.

    Aftermath

News had reached Magnus of Arrans fall and Olafs brave defense, "How did we not know the Scottish were headed to Arran?, Will someone tell me how they slipped by unnoticed?" Magnus had look around the chamber surronded by his captians, none could give an answer, infact none could meet the princes eye.

Magnus circled them as they sat around the large banquet table "Because of this the Scottish have declared open war against us, what do we plan to do about it?" still no-one dared speak up, this was an outrage, many believed that the ring of Norwegian settlements ment that the waters were guarded against counter invasions and Arran's capture ment that it wasn't as strong as first thought.

Magnus stops at the head of the table, he leans forward glareing at the assembled captains "This will not happen again! NEVER AGAIN WILL A NORWEGIAN SETTLEMENT FALL WHILE I COMMAND HERE!!!" he roared, he looked around the room and nodded to a tall figure back in the shadows, "Come forward friend!", the man stepped out of the shadows.

Stenkil Gunnarsson was his name and he had arrived days earlier after being adopted into the royal family, he was to aide Magnus, another young and ambitious commander "My lord, I will raise a force and recapture Arran, they are weakened and are not ready for a counter attack" Stenkil said with confidence in his voice, Magnus nodded "Stenkil will leave as soon as his troops are ready, we will continue to build are forces to strike the mainland" as Magnus was about to continue a messanger approached "Sire, I bring word that reinforcements have arrived, a viking raiding party sent by the King", Magnus looked surprised, he had not recieved word that more troops were on the way.

"What? How was I not told of this in advance? Where have they landed? Who commands the landing party?" he asked, the messanger continued to read "Well my lord, they have landed south of Wick and have already marched close to Inverness castle, Gellir Hvass commands the party"

Gellir Hvass was a name many feared, he had been exiled to Sweden months ago for raiding in the south claiming rebels had been spotted but women, chilldren and the elderly where found instead, he came from a noble family and he had a reputation of cruelty and dread, any prisoners he had captured were executed or forced to fight the other for his satisfaction, he raided villages for pleasure, burning and pillaging. Magnus looked on troubled by this news, "Damn him! Gellir will ruin everything, he is reckless!, how has he convinced my father to be a part of this expidetion?" a captain stood "Sire, Gellir has alot of influence at court, he father may have spoken on his behalf", Magnus knew that having Gellir here could be a good thing, only if he could be contained.

    Northern Scotland

Riding at the head of his army, Gellir Hvass surveyed the Scottlish highlands with distain, he always portrayed an air of arrogance, he had been in Sweden fighting the rebels there trying to earn glory and favour to return to court, his father was ageing and infirm and soon he would take his place on the council of Earls.
His army moved south, he eyed the castle at Inverness, to capture a castle so soon would be a good achievement, he wouldn't stop there, he knew Magnus was looking to break out onto the mainland but if he was able to do it before him, how would that look? He had thought, beating the King's son to it, surely he would be recalled and Gellir be placed in command of the expidition.

    The Inverlochly Massacre

Gellir's army moved towards Inverness, as they made camp a dispatch rider had arrived from Wick, he was shown to Gellir's tent, Gellir's tent was something that befitted a prince or king not the son of an earl, fur covered the floor, the tent was well lit and a table surronded by maps and sketches of seige equipment covered it, his captains debated the best way to assault Inverness, Gellir sat at the head, in full armor, clearly tired from the ride so far he rested his head in his hand in thought, he occassionlaly sipped from a goblet, the rider entered "My Lord, I bring a message from Knut of Wick", Gellir opened his eyes for a moment looking at the rider, he waved his hand for the rider to continue, "He requests you turn your army away from Inverness and move further south towards Inverlochly", Gellir sat forward taking notice.

"So, Knut wants me to put down some rebels? I can see what that old goats up to! He's going to move and capture Inverness and claim the glory for himself, well he needs it", he puts a gauntlet to his chin in thought, he stands and walks towards the messanger, "Tell your master I will do what he asks, but Inverness will be mine" the rider turns and leaves.

The army struck camp and marched towards the rebel castle of Inverlochly, the reached it the next day and began to construct the seige equipment. Inverlochly was underseige.

Gellir's army consisted of raiders, norse arches, some axeman and huscarls, he had paid some Scottish mercenaires to join his army, see only as cannon fodder to soften up the enemy.

As his army got into formation rode along the lines inspecting his troops with his bodyguard, "It looks as though we have them outnumbered!" he said to his men, "Breach the gates! All inside belongs to you!! Take what you can! Let no-one get in your way!!" then with a glint in his eye "Leave none alive!!, We will strike fear to the hearts of the people of this land!!"
    the men cheered.
The archers were the first forward to lay down some fire so that the Scottish mercenaries can move with the ram.

The Scottish troops lumbered forward with the ram, a few were picked off by the enemy archers, Gellir stood in his stirrups surveying the battlefield.

The archers fired volleys over the walls hitting the rebels that were lined there, Gellir applauded as he heard the screams, he was anxious for the ram to reach the gates, as it do so a battle cry was heard and the rebels opened the gates and charged out, not wanting to be penned inside the walls.

It was a quick fight and the mercenaries that Gellir had hired fled, he turned his horse and rode after them screaming "COWARDS!!" and insulting many of their mothers.
"I think its time we stopped playing games, RAIDERS!! FORWARD!!" he screamed, the first regiment advanced from a steady walk to a run.

The Scottish rebels after beating Gellirs mercenaries were ready for the raiders and braced themselves, the raiders reached them axe's swinging, the rebels with no armour to protect them soon found their numbers thinning quickly.

The raiders battered the rebels back, Gellir could see from his position that the raiders were hacking their way through and applauded and shouting encouragement. The rebels then began to retreat, breaking and hoping to get some sort of cover in the castle.

The raiders cheered as they chased the rebels into the castle, they could smell a good fight and hoped that inside there were more men that could match them.

As they reached the brow of the hill rebel archers appeared and fired volley after volley into the raiders, a surprise tactic and it worked for a moment, many of them were thrown back, many of their sheilds where useless because of the arrows, the archers fired as quickly as they could but the raiders were on them within in moments.

In the heat of their charge the raiders didn't realise more rebels appearing and surronding them, soon it was a fight to the death, shields were broken and blood stained the snowy floor, Gellir meanwhile was becoming impatient then a few raiders came running out bloody and battered, a few of them had escaped with their lives barely, Gellir nodded and another regiment ran forwards.

They quickly made their way in, the archers had been beaten by the previous raiders, Gellir still had many troops in reserve and would only commit his prized Huscarls if really needed. A few rebels stood ready as they could hear the raiders approaching.

The rebels were tired after beating off the previous charge but this time the raiders hit them hard, axes swung here and there and a limb or two scattered the floor, the rebels were trying to hold them off again but it was getting harder.

The rebels were no longer fighting for the castle, they were fighting for themselves and each other, their wives and children and they're very existence but they were being outmatched and out fought, soon their captain was killed, surronded and trying to fight them.

The remaining rebels knew the castle was lost and that they had no hope of seeing tomorrow but they fought on bravely, only a handful remained and fought till the last.

The battle was over and Gellir entered the castle, he surveyed the scene, bodies piled up in the square, his men running around pillaging whatever they could find, he didnt care, this was all part of war, to the victor the spoils, one of his captains approached "My Lord, what shall we do with the people remaning in the castle, women, children?", Gellir looking down at him from his horse "Well Captain, I want them to remeber today and not even think of rebellion, pick some and have them executed infront of the rest, that will be all captain." The captain nodded and walked off, Gellir wasn't staying, he was going to regroup and head back towards Inverness.

    Stenkil Arrives

After gathering troops at the Norwegian capital, Stenkil's orgininal orders have been changed, he was to depart and recapture Arran, he sits in his quarters on his longship while his troops board and prepare.
"Since that bloodthirsty killer Gellir arrived Magnus wants us to land on the mainland and procede inwards, Arran will have to wait it seems" he says speaking to his trusted lieutenants, one man steps forward "Sir, our spies tell us that if we land north of here the town of Dumfries is near by." he points out on the map to Stenkil, he nods aggreeing "Thank you, well lets not waste time shall we gentleman."

The rest of his troops board and they depart, within hours the shout goes up "Land!" Stenkil stands on deck and can see the Scottish mainland in the distance, the longships land and the troops begin to disembark.

The troops form and begin to march inland, scouts ride ahead and return with reports of how well defended Dumfries is, they arrive a few miles from Dumfries, the town can be seen in the distance, Stenkil informs his captains "I want a bloodless victory here today! The scottish people have already suffered under Gellir, I want Dumfries surrounded, we'll give them the chance to surrender."
Within hours Dumfries is underseige, the troops are ready to attack if the order is given but for now they wait, Stenkil hopes that the inhabitants give in and no blood is spilled.

    The Lion Arrives

After days of a seige on Dumfries, its people starving an old man and been walked through the gates with a message for Stenkil, it was the formal surrender of the city to the Norwegian forces, Stenkil had gotten what he wanted, no blood had been spilled and with the blockade lifted he rode into Dumfries and raised the Norwegian colours.

He was now to stablise the populous of the town and assert his authority, his first descion was to being building roads and improving trade, he had sent messages to nearby Norwegian settlements for aid to help those who suffered during the seige.
Meanwhile in the capital Magnus had recieved word that Dumfries had fallen without a man lost, he was pleased "A clean victory, if we win the hearts of these people then it may spread, we are not bloodthirsty killers." while Magnus continued a messanger interupted with news the nobles back in the homeland had requested that Skye be captured next.

Magnus was not going to commit forces to a rebel castle that was ill kept and of no value what so ever "This is a waste of time! The fight is on the mainland, if we are to suppress the Scottish we can not go off putting down rebels!" Magnus had said with the anger filling him, this was a waste of time and he knew it.

Inge and Hardeknud had turned their army away from the fort after seeing that two Scottish forces faced them, they knew the odds, they may claim victory but it would be at a cost, the contiuned their march and whilst making camp while the snow fell scouts had reported that three Scottish settlements where close by, Sterling Castle, Edinburgh and Perth. Both Sterling and Edinburgh were poorly defended with few garrisoned there, if Inge and Hardeknud split their forces, Hardknud decided to take Sterling and Inge seeing Edinburgh the easiest between that and Perth planned to march in that direction.

Gellir had continued to marshal his forces in Inverlochly, he had made that castle a formidable location that many would steer clear of, after what he had done to the Scottish messanger they had sent he knew that the forces under Domnall of Ayrshire would not take that lying down.

Domnall was a respected and brave general in the Scottish forces and Gellir knew that if he were to attack Inverlochly then he may have a fight on his hands, Domnall was an astute tactition and had out manouvered many English armies sent north and repelled them back across the border.
With Norway capturing many settlements and its armies pushing inland from all directions, the Irish, Welsh and even the English had been quiet all seeing how the situation would turn out.

Lars Masson had not ventured outside of Kirkwall after hearing the news of what was going on in the mainland, he had decided to improve the town he had been charged with and use it as a staging post for arriving forces. He had walked the walls of the town every morning looking out to the sea but on this day he had recieved news that many ships were seen on the horizion, he arrived on the walls and looking out he could see a ship he recognised, it was the King's flagship Svalbard, surely Haakon had not arrived? Lars ran down to the stables and got his fastest horse and with his bodyguard he rode to the coast, seeing the ships closer he could see the Kings standard, he relayed a message to inform Prince Magnus as fast as he could that his father had arrvied.

The old king had decided that upon hearing news of what was going on in Scotland he had made the descion to set sail leaving his chancellor in charge of Norway "My lord, we can see the coast, what are your orders? Do we land here or move the fleet south?" asked an admiral. Haakon inside his quarters had planned to land close to the Scottish capital as possible, march inland capture it, set up his temporary captial there, he would order all the generals to attend court and finally settle the problems before selecting a Regent of Scotland and returning to Norway.

The King looked up "Well Admiral, turn the fleet south, we know where the Scottish captial is, we shall land close to it and march inland, I want you to use the fleet to secure the waters around the coast nearby, we'll use that as a beachhead." The admiral nodded. Haakon wasnt here to undermine Magnus but things had gotten out of control, Magnus was losing his authority, Haakon did not want to invade Scotland, capture it then lose it to a ambitious general who would set up his own kingdom, Haakon wanted Scotland, he had planned to push further south after Scotland and challenge England, the Norwegian Kings once had claim to the English throne and now Haakon would have a formidable empire if he were to seize the English crown.
But for now Haakon moves South.

    The Battle of Inverness

It was a misty morning when Knuds army had arrived near Inverness castle with their seige equipment in tow, they had carried out Knuds orders and were going to assault the walls from different positions with seige towers, ladders and a battering ram, Scotch mercenaries had been paid to help with the seige but were kept an eye on incase they defected.

Knud had prepared his men, he was a seasoned general and knew how to get his troops ready for a fight, they respected him and saw him as a natural leader of men, from his mount in the Norwegian lines Knud surveyed the battlefield, "Siegetowers ADVANCE!" he shouted and the towers lumbered forward.

With the towers moving the ladders then advanced towards the otherside of the gatehouse, Knud was hoping his plan of spreading the defenders thin on the walls whilst going in through the front door was going to work, many of his men were itching to get into the castle and plunder what they could find.

Seeing the defenders moving across the walls and into positon after seeing the seige equipment approaching, Knud rode forward to get a closer look, his captian a few paces behind, "It looks as though they are ready for us my lord, their archers are firing volley after volley", Knud nodded in agreement, he turned to his archers and gave a chop motion with his hand and they advanced in kind.

Both sides fired at the other, the seige pieces rumbled forwards, the ladders were close to the walls and ready to be lifted into positon, the towers, the slowest of them all made steady progress and was nearly at the walls.

The ladders were hoisted into positon, as the first lot of huscarls started to climb each rung an archer would fire and pick them off, within minutes another huscarl was racing up the ladder, the archers werent firing fast enough and before long the Norwegians were on the walls, a regiment of Highland Nobles were waiting in the tower and charged out to meet them.

The Nobles smashed into the huscarls, the Scotch archers were caught inbetween the two and drew their short swords hoping that the numbers would be effective against the Norwegians, axes were swinging left and right, Scottish swords cut Norwegian flesh.

With the fight on the walls getting bloody, the ram had reached the gates and as the Scottish mercenaries moved the ram into positon the gate began to open and some mailed knights charged forward, the mercenaries moved forward but hot oil poured from above and scorched those below.

As the mercenaries stumbled out from the gate disorienatated from the oil, many screamed in again were then silenced as they were trampled by the charging horse, the mercenaries broke and fled, Knud ordered the archers to fire at the reatreating Scottish and they were cut down.

Knud seeing that with the tower just about hit the wall and the fighting still fierce on the other side the gate remained shut, the mailed kinghts blocked the way, "Huscarls! I want that gate open!" Knud had shouted, the huscarls cheered and advanced, the knights prepared to charge again and were cut to ribbons by the advancing Huscars, the gate was not only open but had been broken off its hinges.

As the cheer went up as the huscarls moved through the gate, a loud groan and creeking of wood could be heard as the seige tower opened and it slammed into the wall, the axeman inside rushed forward but a few where caught with arrows.

The axeman seeing the archers trying to protect this part of the walls ran forward ready, again a few more were hit and fell from the walls before the axemen were on the archers.

The archers didnt last long, the axemen chopped and hacked away, the archers threw down their bows and tried in vain with their short swords, the two handed axes were cutting down the archers and before long they had taken the walls.
On the other wall the Huscarls were having trouble with the Highland Nobles, the archers on this wall were yet again made short work of, the nobles were proving to be a tougher challenge.

The Nobles were gaining the upper hand, shields were splintered and many huscarls were knocked from the walls, the large two handed swords of the Scottish Nobles were being wielded expertley, finally an hour or two later of fighting and the Nobles had repelled the Norwegian attack from the walls for now, bodies littered the walkway.

The Scottish defenders were losing ground and fast, two walls of the castle and been taken and Scottish mercenary pikeman advanced through the gate towards the city square. Alexander Steward, son of the Scottish King was leading the defense of the castle and seeing that all was lost readied his body guard to charge the approaching pikeman.

Looking at his bodyguard and giving them a confident nod, they had served and protected him consistantly and now they knew this was their one last great charge, Alexander raised his sword and they progressed from a trot to a gallop then into a full charge.

The pikeman stood fast and the bodyguard charged right onto the pikes, many buckeled and snapped, horse flailled and fell to the ground and some were pulled from their mounts and stabbed.

Knud had rode into the castle with his bodyguard as well as two regiements of mounted Huscarls, he could hear the sounds of fighting in the square, seeing bodies scattered around and knowing that the battle was almost over he looked at the captain of the huscarls "This is it! We have them! This is your chance! For the KING! FOR NORWAY! Make this place ours!!" the captain fired up by these words he ordered his troops towards the square, the pikeman had been cut down and only a few remanied, the sounds of hooves could be heard approaching, Alexander Stewart and what remainded of his bodyguard readied themselves as the Huscarls charged in.

The charge smashed into the Scottish and already tired from the previous fighting they tried their best, Knud had moved close to the square to watch the battle, the Huscarls hacked and slashed, a mighty cheer could be heard as the regiment of Highland Nobles that had defended the wall charged in hoping to save the day, Knud had held several regiments in reserve so the hope that they could win was a foolish one.
Alexander Stewart fought bravely but was hacked down, a huscarl had cut him in the side with his axe but Stewart killed him, changing sword hands he continued on, he had blocked another axe shot but another huscarl caught him in the middle of his back, he slumped forward and fell from his horse. The battle was over Inverness was won.

The bodies of the fallen were given a proper burial, Knud knew they had fought well this day, it was a hard fought victory, two regiments of huscarls had been wiped out and his Scottish mercenaries had broken and fled, Alexander Stewart's body was put in state in the grand hall, in full battle armour with his sword, Knud had contacted the Scottish King and Alexander's body was sent to the capital with Knuds personal bodyguards. Even in victory there can be honour for the fallen.
