Well... i once had a nice battle.

I still played vannila Rome Total War.

    Difficulty M/M.

Well i was the Romans Jullii and Salona was under constant siege from Trace who had conquered all of Greece. I sent armies towards salona. But also an army which only consisted out of 2 Roman armoured generals. They were send to command the troops that were a bit further. Next turn they would catch up with them.

Well those 2 generals, 25 units each bronze swords and shields and no chevrons, happened to be attacked by a 3/4 stack of Trace wich included some phalangites and militia cavalry.
The Romans retreated but again were attacked. So they had to fight.

The battle was awsome. The militia cavalry were first killed in a corner of the map. After that it was continiously charging with one general from behind and then the other general from the front. That was dangerous when charging phalangites, but their general was already killed by my Romans.

Then the battle was over. All the Tracians were killed and the Romans had only lost 30 of the 50 bodyguards. They were rewarded with a place in history and 8 chevrons each

Both managed to become faction leader for a while and they died at high age.

    And then XGM.

Decius Mus, Roman general who fought Pyrhus of Epirus.
Now he have conquered, Sicly, North Italie, Gaul and the half of Germania. He is 60 years old and the Roman Faction leader. He once was, Decius Mus, then Decius Gallicus, after that Decius the Butcher and now his name is Decius Germanicus.

Well I have a general called Memnon the Conqueror. He manged to get that title through bloody battles across Greece (fighting the Macedonians) and then throughout Italy (fighting the Romans). So basically this one general and his army manged to pretty much make my empire. He has probally been in at least 1/2 of my battles. But he will soon become legend as his itme on this earth is nearly up.

Well, I must say Decius Mus (Rome) who won Sicily (I think it's called) and ordered to slay 10.000 people in the city Syracuse, I would call that madness 2000 years ago.

In the RTW vanilla I had a greek faction leader with 50-100 bodyguards(don't remember) and no army, I was moving him to some settlement in Thrace/Russia when I met huge army of spearmen and slingers, I didn't want to lose my faction leader (had almost won all the way around the black sea and was high ranked) so I chosed to play him in the battle and was 100% sure to flee with the faction leader alife as fast as I could, but I killed the army with him, he killed around 500 soilders.

Well during my Greek campaign and had a problem in Rhodes.... EVERYONE WHO CAME FROM THERE WAS CRAZY AS HELL! I had 3 people living under one roof "hiding from the world.." and to make things worse...My faction leader (Spartan.) gone mad after killing over 50.0000 (10.000 was Macs during the Great war.) the rest was from BRRRRRRRUUUUUNSSSS(ing) people!

I crapped myself when My full stack (with a spartan.) with a 8 star leader turned to "the Dark Side"...It was getting ready to land on Italy...but then it turned and it was very close to my caprtial city (which had my leader inside..) I was trying to bribe him and even killing him....so I decided to use my other stack to wipe him completely ...(the entire army was wiped out...and my full stack was reduced to to half...I was forced to make a new stack and BTW...Italy was mine for 10 turns but was pushed back...I also landed a full stack on the bit below the boot..it was ass raped and was untimely beaten back into the last foot holding of my conquered lands.... )

also...when i was playing as the Romans.. the same thing happens but this time it was in Greece and it was a 10-star leader...I just left him as he started to wander into Thrace... yet I was still mad that it happened to me..it was the third time a full stack in Greece turned...(the guy who turned had 4 rings...how on earth did he turn?)

So...Greece isn't the best place to go when your laughing about how easy it is to take over someone.....

I had a gallic general Caradog the Mad - he was totally barking having all sorts of traits such as hooting etc. Turns out though even with the Morale penalties the army he commanded hammered over half the Indepedant gallic armies into bloddy smears on the floor.

His fave tactic was to charge anything that moved head on (i did this with him as I wantted rid of him) accompanied by all the army's cavalry (5 Units).
He refused to die in battle eventually becoming a ten star general and conquering Iberia and half of Germany before succuming to old age at 72. Spent his whole life on campaign as I dared not let him be a govenor due to all his lunatic traits.

Fix the problem, not the blame!

Well, my greatest/stupidest general was Decius Mus in my Roman campaign. He had become first Decius Africanus for his victories over the Carthaginians, then Decius Magnus because of his numerous victories. His father had recently died in battle with the Gauls, and he became the faction leader.

So, he continued his campaign into Southern Italy, and after numerous more battles, he fights the Roman Rebels. After he has charged face first into Greek Phalangites, and enemy cavalry, and every other unit imaginable, he falls to a mercenary samnite spear. WTF is that all about. I was rather upset with that scenario, but soon another General by the name of Marcus Valens arrives and quickly takes his spot as greatest general, and has suceeded in wiping out the Roman Rebels.

Half my Gallic generals are crazy... Its ridiculous how many I've killed off but they just keep coming of age like that... The battle speeches are pretty funny though. I personally like the moonpeople one...

My Decius Mus was killed in an earthquake while besieging Messana, with the only army I could afford under his command... Earthquake comes, Mus is killed, over 3/4 of the army is taken down with him. wtf.

That's funny, Scutarii. That also brings us back to the eternal question: Are we realy in control our destinies?

In my latest Bosporan campaign, I had a ten-star general, with a respectable number of influence and a huuge bodyguard. He was relatively young in his forties. But all those Scythian assassination attempts messed him up some, and his madness eventually got his stars down to five or six. Still a pretty good general, but meh.

I remember when playing vanilla I had this family member who came of age with very good command and management traits, but he was also "unusual". I wanted to kill him off then, but then his other traits seem quite promising, and he also had the trait "barren", so he couldn't pass down his mad genes. So I stuck him in Mediolanum, and he eventually became an excellent governor and a decent general (due to the "understanding of strategy" and "understanding of logistics" lines of traits). When he died in his seventies I actually mourned his death.

But yeah, I love mad generals, I just use them as replenishable heavy-infantry. Later in the game, I just accumulate all my mad/useless generals in a stack, and then send them as a vanguard to soften enemy numbers before my "real", night-fighter super-general and his veterans swoop down and finishes them off.

Decius definitely wasn't. And neither was I, so I'm wondering who was controlling his destiny? Game mechanics?

I would put money and random scripted events that the player is completely clueless about unless he happens to open the desc_events folder in his game data and figure out where and when they occur

I once encountered a Roman general who rode straight into the front of a Macedonian phalanx when it was virtually the only not-routing unit on the field.

Ironically, his name was Gaius Julius.

I haven't had mad generals, only great ones. Right now my best general is Pamillos the Conqueror, a nice Egyptian fellow. 6 command stars, three golden chevrons, traits like Great Defender, Conquering Hero and Legendary Conqueror (although he hasn't been in Europe ). At the moment he's 52, so he has a few more years to go. If I recall correctly, he has single-handedly conquered Syria, Mesopotamia, Anatolia and he's know taking cities over in Armenia. If he dies, the next generation of great generals (guy called Necrotimes, faction Heir, 9 command stars, 3 silver chevrons, 32 years old and also a Conquering Hero) is ready to take his place.
