It gives you an ability to rebuild Roman Empire from ruins.

lol, I thought yesterday that I'd make a rant post about the Byzantines to the topic where somebody asked what faction he should play. I mean the Byzantines roster sucks, they are nothing like the old Roman Empire, they have nothing interesting, just an unhistorical ww2 flame thrower unit. They're just a fillup faction between the western Catholics and eastern Islamic factions. And they're purple!

Thnx! And after all - NOBISCUM DEUS!

Rus? Are you kidding? Rus was archenemy of Latvians for 10 centuries!

EDIT: Its OK When German crusaders arrived in 1200, Letts (protoLatvians) made alliance with them (and taked Latin/Catholic faith) to fight their former seniors - Princeps of Novgorod and Polotsk. And so it begins...

I agree. Never liked the byzantines unit roster. It's just... well it's boring though SS spiced them up quite a bit.
Everyone also seemed to like the byzies the most in vanila.

    In SS?
The super-powered roster with no technical weakness.

    In general?
    Massive fanboy logic.

I think many people play the faction only because it has some relation to the Roman Empire, but I really don't see it any more Roman than HRE or the Italian factions. Actually almost everything about it is quite different from Rome, and this is why I don't see it as a true heir to the Roman Empire which I love.

I can't speak for everyone but I think alot of people like them because they are the true heir to the Roman Empire. Alot of people here played Rome Total War and loved it. So, its obvious that alot of people would like to play a Roman faction. I never played Rome Total War but, I love Roman history. So Byz is one of my favorite factions.

Never played RTW? You don't know what you are missing.

Great location -- right in the middle of the action.

(I think I'm going to start a band called Fanboy Logic. Anyone with me?)

The Byzantine Empire is my fav faction, probably because it's Roman, good location and has some great units.

just the idea of reviving old rome, in history it was very much a possiblitiy at least untill the 4th crusade, so in the idea of changing history its any romaphiles dream.

besides that they have a very good roster, great archers, ok defensive infantry, great attack infantry, strong calvary, horse archers, flamethrowers are fun but limited, and they have very strong city units, with really only venice and a few others beating them on that front

i just wish they had better spearmen, and better armor upgrades, in mtw2
also wheres my large greek shields and paramerions, n spathions( a knight's calvary heater shield is not the same thing as a byzie shield)

The greatest city in the world against all the world? Doesn't that sound fun?

I like the Byzantines i just wish that they had a stronger unit roster like the HRE.Also it would be cool if there was a way in which After you capture Rome
that a some kind of script can be made to acknowledge that feat and in doing so the faction name changes from the Byzantines Empire to the Roman Empire. Yea i know that it is not historically accurate but everything doesn't have to be. Also the color purple has got to go. How about RED and Gold or something.
