Default never been in such a jiffy

england. 60ish turns into early campaign. negative 30,000 treasury.

most of my problems stem from my behavior as the 'pope's good doggy'. this leads to an increase in difficulty since i have not blitzed my way through scotland, ireland, or france because i want to remain on the pope's good side. i have luckily taken bruges and antwerp as well as wales and york. recently i've ventured into the iberian peninsula after Leon-Castille acted aggresively towards my southern coast. i'm also there to save Portugal from the beating they are taking from both the Moors and Leon. most of the catholic factions are my allies.

the extreme sink in my coffers is due to having only 2 full stacks. i want to keep a noble reputation & impress the pope, so those two stacks are usually doing nothing. now they are conquering cities from the Castilles (that is until the Pope calls for a cease of hostilities )

    any suggestions?

p.s: anyone else think Pirate ships should've been scrapped and rethought? can't even sail without those superships wiping the sea floor with me, and they've ended my 'no battle losses' streak. T_T

time for a crusade I suspect!

Pirate ships can be sunk - just get 4 cogs (or better) and build up your admiral's abilities.

Well since you are at war with Castille, I suggest you blitz your way trough Spain as fast as you can, take as many cities as possible before the Pope demands a ceasefire. That should give you some more income. Then when you control a large part of Spain I suggest you call a crusade to a Moorish city like Granada/Cordoba. Let both of your stacks join, this will be very good for your finances as you do not have to pay upkeep for crusading armies. With the movement points advantage and the two crusader armies you'll be able to drive the Moors out of Spain within a couple of turns. Once you did that you're probably not in the red anymore and you got yourself a pretty empire stretching from Nottingham to Granada
It looks bad in the newspapers and upsets civilians at their breakfast...

If you don't need 2 full stacks, disband them, or spread them out into settlements so you can get as many units on free upkeep as possible.

Upkeep and agent wages are always the major killers.
