You cant be playing RTW for "atleast a year", the game only came out in September 2004, you probably meant to say you are playing it from last year... :cool

Try the greeks, sell map information, get trades with everyone and get a clean and sharp eye to Macedonia sooner or later they will attack you. You should win over them eventually, probably because the human player is often smarter than the AI and the other reason is the spartans, not only theyre a cool unit, theyre powerful too. All in all the greeks are my all time favorite and i think many share this with me.

    How about Germans?
Combination of chosen archers, chosen axes, spears and gothic or noble cavs can match up with romans. Also, they are easy to retrain (minor city units)
In one test, chosen axes actually beat up Urbans using warcry in winter forest (They have bonus fighting in snowy woods) Even on summer flatland, chosen axes simply cut up early cohorts.
Maybe you would like other barb factions.(Gaul, Iberia, Britain) Gallic foresters SLAUGHTER early legions(hastati, principes, triarii) and inflict serious damage to PM legions
For britain, you have good light chariots. They run cantabrian circle shooting arrows as powerful as forester arrows. And head hurler really kicks ******. Though they ruin your shrine plan (they require specific shrine. Sorry I forgot the name), the heads they throw are almost same as Urban pilas + bonus morale damage. (I never knew human heads with quicklime are THAT great)

In a word: Egypt. Decent infantry if you protect their flanks. Pharoah's bowmen that can rip apart any infantry army with ease. Mounted archers on chariots and camels that can shred any army without good cavalry (though they're nowhere as good as the horse culture mounted archers, the other units make up for it). And it has one of the most value-for-money cavalry units in the game: Desert Cavalry. They come in units of 80 in a medium setting as opposed to the more usual 54 among cavalry. They are able to rip apart most armoured units. And then there are the chariots, which if used correctly can actually rout the entire enemy army in one stroke. Yes the Egyptian army is good. Just pin the opponent down with your infanrty, and let your desert cavalry/chariots.mounted archers do their work.

And you are bestowed with one of the best geographical locations around. The 3 cities along the Nile ensure that you will never go hungry, and you are surrounded by some of the richest cities in the game (Antioch, Rhodes etc) ripe for the taking. You can expand upwards towards Asia Minor and Greece and taking some of the best cities in the game before you even meet Rome, and you can even envelope Rome from an attack by Greece and Africa. Yes, Egypt is more then a match for Rome.

Human head with quicklime weren't that great. Head hurlers are complete fantasy. They didn't exist historically.

Ya cuse there income is low sometimes, all of the tribes r at war with earch other, and the units are beaten easly by hastati earlier in the game. I was thinkin bout carthage and spain but if spain had archers and one unit of heavy cal i would pick them. If carthage had archers and a heavy-unphelixed unit capible of beatin urbs but they dont. :crying
I might try germania and spain cause they seem good threats to rome. When i played as eygypt i was loosin money some reason and then i got lots of money. I just dont like the chariots.lol

You're probably over-extending your military. Don't build too many units as they cost upkeep. A thing I like to do is simply use the units they give you at the start only (except for making garrison units) until you have established at least 2 large cities.

Bobman, I am reading into your multiple posts in many different threads that you still do not have a basic handle on how to play the game or how to play the strengths and weaknesses of the different factions. Avoid mods until you get a basic understanding of what needs to go on in the game and you will end up having a lot more fun instead of struggling constantly with finances and tactics.

I am not a big Phalanx fan but when played properly these units can be powerful weapons. If you are attacking with phalanxes using the same strategy as if they where Hastati then you need to go back to some sand box battles and play both sides to figure out how to use Phalanx units effectively.

The Seleucids are a fun faction to play, but they require that you learn how to go for the first 10 to 15 turns of the game without basically building any military units at all. I bet this would kill you right now since it sounds as though you are making all the wrong choices in building and unit selection. When I play the Seleucids on VH/VH/N, I usually have control of Asia Minor and Egypt and the Brutii on the ropes before the Marian reforms kick in but it requires a level of patience and forethought that provides a stimulating challenge.

Build only what you need and make sure you use everything that you build. Recruit only what you need to implement your strategy and make sure that every unit is in use in some way or at least in route to where they will be some use. Use Slavery to move your population to where it will do you the most good.

Bobman, I really like the Brutii for the purposes of figuring out how the game works. They are centrally located and close to the great concentration of wonders that is located in the greek/turkish area. You also have lots of opportunities to quickly build up trade income by land and sea and can quickly gain contact with many other factions to open up trade right and sell map information. I usually play this faction with a strategy that controls the Agean and then delivers a two to three turn knock crippling blow to the greeks and Macedonians with one big push up from the Statue of Zeus reinforced with a never ending stream of troops crossing in from Apollonia. Remember the power of the sandwich blockade technique to imobilize greek and macedonian fleets with armies on board even if you do not have the power to wipe them out until reinforcements can be brought to bear in the next turn or two.

Bobman, try a new challenge with the Brutii that requires total world domination instead of just 50+ and conquer Rome. Play the Game on Vary Hard for Campaign and Very Hard (or at least Hard) for battles. First you must conquer all the way to the eastern edge of the map before you can consider turning back to the west for some real bun clinching mega battles.

You may have to move your capital temporarily to the east in order to get the control and stability in far eastern cities such as Susa and Campus Sakae or even Dumatha. Once you get most of these towns up to a stable 12,000 population level you can implement the slavemonger policy and swing your empire and population centers back to the west.

You will not lose tons of money but in fact will end up being the global Banker if you pay attention to what it is that you need to do.

Remember that the Julii, Scipii, and SPQR have your back well covered, so essentially you can play the game as if you are on an island with Tarentum and Croton as your starting cities. The shape of the territories on the northeast side of the Agean will let you take control of that coast without having to move north to the rebel town of Segesta until after you have control of the Greek territories and Macedonia. My army that rolls straight up from the Corinthian Isthmus usually takes out Thrace just for the excercise and if I time it well the Macedonians and Thrace may have beaten the Dacians senseless. I really do not want to deal with management and Pacification of the the towns from Campus Lazyges and Aquincum and further north untill I have completed the full eastern thrust. The mountain passes around Porrilsum and the river crossings and mountains north of Solona make a great defensive barrier to just plug with forts while you funnel your pre-Marian armed forces to the east to smite the heathens. Parthia and Egypt will usually be at war with the Seleucids leaving you free to terminate the Turkish remains of the Greeks and then focus on any residual Pontic Slime while you begin building a military Juggernaut from the captured Greek town. Moving your capital to center at Appollonia and then at Larrissa will reduce the distance corruption as well as the unrest due to distance penalties. The captured Cities of Corinth, Sparta, and Thessalonika are military powerhouses primed to produce Archers/Infantry, Infantry, and Cavalry respectively. The Large temple of Nike that usually comes as a bonus with Corinth is a mega power boost giving two extra bronze chevrons to every unit produced there. The Cypriot rebels are less important than capturing the commercial boost from Rhodes and then invading the Turkish Mainlend when you can credibly field a self supporting army of 12 to 15 frontline units. The biggest problem for me always seems to be the horse archer cultures because even one unit of horse archers seems to turn out to be a royal pain in the ****** even if you have an arny that is stronger than they are on paper. I recruit every Cretan Archer mercenary in Greece and Turkey that I can find because of their superior range and then when I cross into terrritory to the east of Sardis I began to hire every possible unit of Camel Archers or Scythiam Mercinary Horse Archers. I just burn up these last two to burn up the horse archer cultures and keep them occupied while my early legions continue to chew up their territory.

I have not played this technique again with the v1.2 patch, so the old option of just diplomatically disemboweling the eastern cultures including Egypt is probably no longer a viable part of the strategy.

If you would like to play a game of this as the Brutii where we play the game as a documented single player succession game, I would be up for it if we could get 1 or two other responsible players to commit to 2 years (4 turns) rotations. Basically the first player plays four turns and then posts a report of his/her moves and a save game that Player 2 picks up and plays the next two years (four turns) and so on. After we play 2 or three rotations of the each player playing 4 turns we can switch down to 2 turns per player as things get far more complex and we begin to shuttle the center of the Empire.

al in all I found that RTw was pretty easy. The romans have a few toiruybles early on , but after thjey take their first two or three provinces, its a 70-100 year rampage fomr there, until marion reforms, when you get into a civil war and then you easily tka eout the other romans. Greeks ive found to be exrtemly easy. Their units take on early romans easily. The leagions are a problem fo them, but ahveing treh richest proinces in the game makes fill stakcs of legions pocket change, nto to mention that in most games I hold Rome before year 220. Ive played barbarisns, they hasve extremly poweeful units (swordsmen + temple that adds experice= rapeege). But in the medille game when their cities become large and scince they cannot upgrade beying city they beign to revolt, but disregarding that, plaiyng as gual is the funnest faction in the game. ESrtemly hard because its sourounded by enimies, but at the same time it has good untis to actualy fight them off.
Chosen archers make a armie of their own, they can hold thier own in melee acgiant early legions, but are also extermly good achres and can kill half a army before they get to melee. and chosen swordmen are a match for legoinaires, but usally I hold Rome before I have sowrdmen, or befor they get legionaires. Another good facion in Spain, diffcilt and good untis. CArthage iusnt bad becuase its chalinging and is civilized so it can mangae large cities, but noen of its infantry exept sacred band are worth their ******, but a armty with 3-4 war elephans and any combinaiton of other units ( they will rarly see conhat exept whenfighitng horse archers). Just send the elephats and all your cavalry in a full forntal charge agianst the enemy formationm, elephtats first and the cavalry right behind. After the fist untis rout , the rst of them begin to too, if you have your general be oart of the caverly charge he cab get 3-6 stars exra quick.
