    Default Excommunicated

Alright. So one day, Sicily thought it would be fun to declare war take one of my (Venice) castles. I have an army nearby, so I try to retake it... And I get a message that I'll be excommunicated if I attack. What the hell?

It's a pretty stupid situation (bug?) but either way, I'm stubborn as hell so I decide to retake it anyway.

So I am now excommunicated. Just how much will other nations hate me now? Will Millan and France (my allies) leave me over this? How bad will the unrest be? Most of all, how can I get reconciled?

If your faction leader dies you'll get automatically reconciled(or the pope dies), but your best bet is to gift the papacy a nice wad of cash (like a few thousand denariis). I don't think both of your allies would leave you for this, but if a crusade is called against you, you'll be in trouble soon and your allies might probably join it(thus nullifying the alliance) so yeah, you're trapped in a world of hurt for a while should that happen.

give the pope money, propose first then let the "papal" AI decide. but I'm sure you'll end up having enemies in one or so of your allies so stand guard but as long as you have money to pay the pope you're fine. And maybe it helps to be powerful to keep your allies in line.

    another tip to avoid excom:
never attack, always try to defend, the pope usually favors the defender

money gifts to the pope ALWAYS, i repeat ALWAYS help, the pope will favor one with a lot of crosses over ones who have a little

I agree i do the same thing. I just go and Sack Rome and Presto you got yourself a Fun Campaign. Just make sure you have a Kick A** army or Armies though because within a few turns usually about five The Pope will call a crusade on you and soon you will have every Catholic Faction Knocking on your door with full stacks ready to dish out some pain and Hurt on you..

when is start any campaign the first thing i do is to give a regular tribute to the pope, this will keep me in his good favor. Even if you get a message threatening Excommunication, if your standing with the pope is good enough then your relationship with the pop will just drop.
Perfect relations with the papal states ... attack a catholic faction against the popes order ... relations drop to Good
If you butter him up enough then you'll be of the hook

Regulat tribute can be used to keep a good standing with the pope, but the money is better spent on small churches, priests, and then more levels to the churches. If after doing all of this and still needing to raise the pope-o-meter, then regular tribute of 100 or 200 florins a turn is useful. Also, do not give a huge period to the tribute, but keep your diplomat busy every few turns to extend the periods.

The thing is that each time you get the " you will be excommunicated " message your enemy gets the same message and the first one that attack get the excommunication, so you should wait to be attacked, ie. just put your army near that castle and let the Sicilians attack first.

I see some variations of the Papal warning. I assume that not all warnings go to both barties (or do they get identical warnings). Probably more true when the two parties have very differant standings with the Pope.

I take the warnings seriously. Yeah, I sometimes ignore them. I'm a newbie.

I would like to have a better feel for when the other faction has the same orders. I am certain the orders and restrictions are similar regarding time limits. What about when a time frame is not given?
