No only Byzantium gets flamethrowers. Other factions cannot even if they control Constantinople.
thats what i figuered, appreciate it.
is that why so many people play Byzantium? cause of the flame throwers?
I have always been a HUGE fan of the Byzantines. My 2nd ever M2TW campaign was played with them (after I finished with England and unlocked everyone) and I have played several SS campaigns with them too. As an archaeologist in RL, I am fascinated with the history of the later Roman empire. I haven't actually played a Byzantine campaign since Kingdoms came out with the flamethrowers due to other factors (modding mostly) but I can honestly say that for the true fans of the Byzantine Empire, firethrowers is not the reason we play them![]()
it would be the only reason i would play them
i just dont like them, especially that big unwieldy empire you start with...i like to start with a small faction and grow it myself
i agree, like hre and lithuania...i like lithuania because its small
i like byz in regards to history, which i learned about in steven runcimans history of the crusades...they really made the west look like the rabble they were...fanatical, brave and ambitious, but still rabble
I think Byz. is kinda easy because being in the middle of it all you have seas everywhere and its hard not to get rich! I like them but dont like their knights. Love their archers though!
I just dont like how all their soldiers look the same.
Cathapracts should look a bit more heavily armored, they look rather light.
It looks like heavy chain is the thickest armor they got.
if the only reason you dont like to play byz is the large amount of settlements, cant that be changed in the strat or something like that. narrow it down to constantinople and rhodes or theealonica or something.
i always play byz, about the too many settlement thing, one feature i think would be awsome is to start the late era caimpaign without constantinople to reflect the 4th crusade, have them start in a small section of antolia, by the turks
on topic flamethrowers are awesome but they have limited use, in the field they are great to scorch the flanks of the enemy, but too unavailable for regular use, where they shine is the defence of constantinople in sieges they are beyond godlike, and with the situations that city is almost always promised in the caimpaign the weapon is a great help as it was in history

Greek Fire flamethrowers - or perhaps if they were called "hand-pumped Greek fire siphons" they might get more credibility.
Anyway they were deadly against siege towers (as were naffatun)
Too many settlements? If anything, they don't have enough.I usually mod my game to give the ERE Crete in the Early Campaign, then try to role-play a reestablishment of the Roman Empire.
With most factions it just feels silly to conquer the world... The decentralized, feudal states of the West just didn't have it in them, as any real empire would have fragmented in a generation or two.
I'm not sure I've even trained flamethrowers yet in the game, as I'm all about having a sense of realism...
