    Default Barb Factions and Academies

Ok I'm Thrace, I've gone on a slaughter fest through The Aegean Peninsula, and captured all of it.

My question, if I send family members to the Captured "Academy" cities (Athens, Corinth, Sparta e.g.), will they pick up positive traits? Ot are academies useless to Barb Factions?

I had a look at export_descr_ancillaries.txt and it would appear most of the ancillaries obtained from an academy, scriptorium and ludus magna are excluded from barbarian cultures. While Thrace has elements of Greek culture I notice the ancillaries Thracian General's obtain are barbarian types. So I assume academies won't be of any use to you.

    Dammit!

I am currently playing a Germania campaign and I was looking forward to sacking some ultra-civilized city and soaking up all the sweet ancillaries for my generals...hmm.

There are some things that also work for barbarians, though. Your FMs can get a musician and become poets. I'm not sure if there is more or not.

I just got a musician from Sparta for my resident Thracian General, so at least the Academies are worth keeping then......

You got the musician because your general remained in a settlement for one turn and the settlement had an odeon.

The real benefit for barbarian factions when you capture ultra-civilized cities is a foundry. Barbarian factions cannot produce them but if you capture a settlement with one you can upgrade your armour and weapons by +2.

@Andy and anyone interested:- I've also been getting Freeman Clerks from Sparta and Athens, which are VERY useful for a barb faction...train generals up in Athens then send them up to The Supersize Me cities around the eastern Black Sea, and watch the coffers swell (I just conquered and exterminated Tylis for example, now it has 11% growth rate on Very High Taxes....ouch)

It appears there are quite a few trade-related ancillaries that are not excluded from barbarian cultures ie freeman clerks, grain merchants, goldsmith, merchant, silk merchant, and spice merchant. I need to check on all the buildings that award these ancillaries.
