Default Hysteria sure is fun (south korea)

    http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/new...cle3897374.ece

Couple of things to take away from this article.
    1) the internet sure can be a bad thing with the wildfire nonsense it spreads, its happening more and more one only has to look at the recent Chinese nonsense to see evidence of it there as well and I imagine it will only get worse. If there is anything "evil" on the internet its blogs
    2) wth is up with south koreans that they can so mindlessly react to such nonsense
    3) what exactly is it with american sentiments and south koreans? i just dont get the basis of some of the xenophobic/anti american nonsense from them. If its the middle east ok I can see and I can even understand the loonies in south and central america....but south korea? Hello south koreans we are allies, we fought and died along side of you and for decades placed our own people right in the middle of your conflict with north korea.

I have a Korea penpal in Taegu who said "I must ask you something. Is US beef safe?"

"I hope so, I've been eating it 5 days a week for the last month," I replied in hope of sending the message that it was, indeed safe.

I think it's a little silly, but believe me, hardly any South Koreans are hurling anti-American insults or possessive of anti-American sentiments. The youth especially is still largely in love with American culture. I think the Times article goes a bit far to say that Lee Myung Bak leads a country full of anti-American sentiment.

Of course you'll get some that do. That's to be expected. People are people.

“Are we fated to die so young?” wailed a typical post. “I just want to live and fulfill my career dreams, not die mad like an American cow,” wrote another.

Blizzard is an American company, thus we have a stranglehold over South Korea. Should they anger us we can start a Starcraft/WOW embargo and ruin them.

    (just kidding)

Blizzard is owned by Vivendi, a French company.

My point was that Blizzard can't start an "Starcraft/WOW embargo" because it's not up to them to decide.
But this is all slightly off-topic to say the least.

Wait... the french own blizzard? that explains why blizzard likes to siphon the money out of my pockets.

Let's just hope they were fascist communist kittens who were on their way to international fascist communist fair.

Actually, it's Activision Blizzard now(or will be soon)

Shows you how much power Vivendi has over Blizzard, they're taking their name in the merger with Activision

Any kind of mass media can have a negative impact like this, when the uninformed get a hold of it.

What are you going on about? Panic exists in all countries.

I know a lot of South Koreans. Some are extremely friendly people. However, just as many, are Racist and extremely nationalistic. Refusing to talk to Japanese, believing that 'foreigners' are genetically worse at Video games than Koreans, etc. I don't know why this is a widespread feeling, but I suppose its a hold over from decades past.

Note: This Article is utterly pathetic. What kind of reputable news source gets away with crap like 'obsessed computer crazed geeks?'

Yeah but not like that, its something Id expect from hmm...less developed nations. South Korea isnt some backwards country and one would think there would be more questioning of dubious things posted on the next.

Yeah see my online gaming experience is similar and I dont understand it. Mind you Im not berating the South Korean people just a segment of its population that seems extremely odd. The video game thing I see alot too, kinda of wierd to have a racial superiority complex over a video game

Well to be honest, I don't know why. The only assumption I can come too is an incomplete transfer of culture. Before ww2, Korean culture was obviously antiquated compared to Western culture. They had not gone through as much social evolution, and removed certain predisposed bias against certain groups. After ww2, they wholeheartedly embraced Western culture, and many Western values- even religion. I can only assume that due to their lack of social evolution previously, that some viewpoints that were more dominant in the past can still thrive.

    Only a theory of course.

My best friend in high school was Korean. HATED to be confused for Japanese.

His parents had escaped when young from N.K. to S.K. then to here. His grandfather was killed by the North Koreans because he was a school-teacher.

Hated communists and the Japanese. Quite virulent kid, actually.

South Korea, with other Asian nations, suspended imports in 2003 after cattle in the US were found to have BSE: the protesters are convinced that the ban has been lifted too soon and with too many concessions to Washington.

    -------------------------------

this is for real too. They have a legit reason to be concerned.

Lets see 2003 and its now 2008 and no BSE problem in that time frame...yeah real legit reason there! If you read the article it was nonsense basically posted on the net with pseudo science that Koreans are genetically more prone to mad cow disease then others and that evidently American beef is all tainted. None of these two have any basis in fact. But my post was less about the ban and more about the knee jerk reactions from people that stuff even false things on the net cause. Btw you equated this with fear of chinese products...I assume then you believe western paranoia over Chinese products are also legit?

I think we're going a bit in the wrong direction.

I just talked to another South Korean girl who asked me about mad cow disease in our beef. I explained to her that I never have become sick from eating American beef.

She said she felt relieved to hear me say that.
