    Default Worst Defeats ?

I just had an awesome battle, full legion of romans against a free peoples army full of greeks :hmmm: in the alps it was snowing, i got pwned though

Playing on VH this was the first time the enemy got smart, i tried to act smart and fought in 3 lines with the maniples, i though victory would be easy, smashed equites into the back of them, and out of no where the horsmen get trapped by hoplites depressing and it ended up with the hoplites boxing me in in a square and destroying me, and consider the fact that my general was 8 star against a captain shame all battles are not like this!

so what are your worst defeats ? talk about them

it was fun, but not great battle i got spanked and for some reason, the barbarians was greeks with sicilian hoplites, hmm crazy eh do the enemy gain bonuses on Very hard, because it doesnt seem possible when my general had 8 stars against none, and it was the best possible situation for the romans.

It's more that on very hard the AI units have very good morale and won't break rather than being tougher. I think that's unrealistic (unless they are the equivalent of 'guards units') so I won't play at that level. If you really want a hard game try multiplayer! I've only ever played RTR TIC with MP and it was an experience.

Did you get a look at the AI army composition at any stage? That is, were the units upgraded in any way with weapons, armour or experience.

I've always found that upgraded and experienced armies perform a lot better than a rookie army.

With your horsemen - did you not keep track of what they were doing and what was around? In a very messy battle it's sometimes difficult to keep track of units (even after you think that you've moved them out of harms way).

Aye i did keep track off them, but they got slaughtered straight away by being boxed in, though i usually wouldent think twice when sending over 400 equites in the back of 1 unit of hoplites, so i didnt check, then when i looked a huge pile of dead horses lol.

And yes the guy who said my general ran away, yes but i did it so he wouldent die, there was no hope for Amulus the mighty and he was my best general with the best legion, and he got owned by greeks lol

Of all the units I try and be careful with are cavalry as they, in general, don't perform well when surrounded by infantry. I don't think equites are a very powerful unit anyway.

I am quite prepared to move cavalry behind a number of infantry units to rest - I think that's a historical tactic as well (it makes sense to me even if it's not historical).

    Aulus the not so mighty?

My favourite battles is where at the start you wonder if the best you can do is to make a mess of the AI army before losing the battle. By fighting the battle you end up with a victory.

My best ever battle was a RTR 6 Gold one where I had a Roman army that faced two full stack Bactrian armies (think Macedon with elephants). Fortunately, I had almost finished with the first army when the second one struck home. Each army had about two or three elephant units which made a mess of my lines.

I've yet to have a RS campaign where I've had to face the Seleucids (from memory at least).

I usually keep cavalry to the end to run over the cowards who flee so naturally i dont need to rest them, but in this occasion all my lines were dying and the greeks wasnt seemed to be falling to my legion, so i sent the equites round and hit them, but oh well eh! not all battles can be won

Aulus was very much mighty before this battle

The plebs new nickname for him - Aulus the Gay -

This was probably my best battle, in terms of fun, as usually i just attack and watch my men kill, but this time i had to watch it all and actually plan because they wasnt seem to be dying, i guess i didnt realise i had it on VH shame theres no way to change it

Yes they do gain unrealistic bonuses on Very Hard.
If this was for real...you would have a nice time explaining this incompetence to the senate...

    Your general ran??

And how come you are outnumbered 100 to 1 at the end and you are 'narrowly' defeated.

Tough lesson that's why I love this game.

It's not the heroic victories that make this game great, it's the narrow defeats.

I had this great battle--two Roman legions against four Gallic stacks. Lagged something fierce, but it was awesome. I tried to deploy next to the other army, but the Gauls wedged between us and I was overrrun.. was very fun though, but I admit was so frustrated when my legions were wiped out.

Also had a 1 vs 1 against Germania in which my legion was utterly and completely destroyed. The general was someone I had been training for some time, too. The legion was understrength and pushing for a friendly city but didn't quite make it.

shame? losing is fun, yeah it sucks for a battle, but now all the sudden your on the defensive, and its challenging
Life goes on, and Carthage keeps killing Romani like its nothing.

Well I don't have any pics of my worst defeat in my current Roman Campaign. But it was against a Carthage Army. There was 9 of those Scuritti(Can't spell) infantry that threw 4 volleys of plium and destroyed my entire line. PLus they had heavy cavarly and phalanxes so half way through the battle I told my legion to reform near a hill and after that the entire army was destroyed. My General was killed and after the battle I lost the legion. Only 226 men survived out of 3300.

After this battle I decided to take revenage on the city that Carthage Army came out of I forgot the name . So when I took it I exterminated it :Cough: I mean Relocate them.

But in my campaign CARTHAGE IS GONE so I don't have to worry about them anymore.

It was the republican second against two stacks of free people. I though I was a god and could easily take them. So I split my forces and attacked both at once. It was horrible with like 3000 against 1500 on each side. I was hit by archers and cavalry then my general was killed. It was a lesson though. Dont underestimate the free people
