Sorry for the long-winded post, but i just wanted to be clear on a few points and vent some of my frustration. Comments and help is always appreciated.
1. Is there a limit to the retinue a general can have? In my Templar game, my grandmaster was getting all the "duke of..., count of ... king of..." kind of banners, until he wasn't anymore. (he didn't get acre or Jerusalem) Plus i remember reading a long time ago about special swords (it may have been the DLV mod) that gets passed between generals. Well my grandmaster fought the Egyptian sultan with the "sword of the messiah" or something like that, and never got it after he won and killed him (no big deal if thats from the DLV mod)
2. How the hell do you get command points? I noticed enemy generals get 3 points off the bat to offset crappy battle ai (which i think is kind of cheap, but w/e), but it seems like i need to have 10 heroic victories in a row or something to get a remotely good command general. My Grandmaster that i mentioned earlier, conquered about 8-10 provinces as well as fighting a few other battles before "retiring", and he only had 5 stars before dying. Do people have any tips?
3. I am currently playing version 6.0 and i know you have to start a new game for 6.1. Should i be worried that the 6.1 came out so close to 6.0? I read somewhere on the forum about the gunpowder event not happening if playing early era. I'm at turn 60 right now, should i get a fix somewhere in preparation or give up and get 6.1? I'm most worried of this one.
4. Campaign AI. Ok, I'm playing as H/VH. Lot's of people say playing as Knights Templar is the toughest, because you start with 1 province and have to fight the toughest factions.. blah.. blah. That's why i chose them. Honestly though, I feel like a video game hero who has to fight minions who slightly increase in power each level before facing the "Boss" (with a "special" weakness, lol). Early in the game, Egypt and Turkey had the biggest army and no enemies, and instead of sending them to crush me, they waited for me to expand my power, while sending little skirmish parties to annoy me a little. Turkey didn't even choose to attack me until i had a decent garrison on my borders. The fight for Jerusalem was ridiculous. Egypt sent a motley band of spearmen and peasant archers to my castle acre, where i crushed them, then i moved my army to the defenseless Jerusalem without even a fight. Crusade for the holy land: Done. The only reason I still haven't launched a blitz on them in their weakened state is that I'm hoping they smarten up and take some of my cities. This leads me to:
5. Battle AI. I'm not even sure if there is an improvement in this area. I'm not sure because i haven't played with vanilla battle ai in over a year. Some of my experiences:
The Ai sent their general ahead of their army only to get killed by my spearmen. I've had numerous occasions where i pummeled the enemy with my archers and balistae while they did nothing and i sat back and turned the speed to x6. Also, they would send their archers too far for the missile skirmishes, so I can easily crush them with my cavalry. For some reason, when big armies siege my cities/castles, they build like 5 rams and 1 tower, 1-2 ladders, then they run up to my walls within shooting distance. What boring fights.
Alright, don't get me wrong. I think there are major improvements to the vanilla AI, and some other awesome features, so kudos to the mod makers. What I'm getting at is this:
Am i judging too early and the Campaign AI gets better? I haven't experienced the wrath of the Jihad yet, so maybe that will set me straight.
Should i install an alternate AI on top of SS?
(someone recommended the XAI project in my other
topic, but i don't think it's compatible with SS 6 yet)
Are there any "smart" battle ai out there i should try?
Please share some of your experiences so that I will stay motivated to play or get motivated to change my Ai's.
