Is there like a little red box with I think like two swords crossed or something like that. When that appears that means your army has no place to go and so if it loses the battle or retreats every unit will be destroyed.

Yes, is my only major gripe with the game. It's never clear when you lose an army from withdrawing. In fact, i've lost so many from this that'd I prefer to fight.

(Note: The red icon never appears)

Its a skull and sword, its not hard to miss if you like to look at your enemies army details often and its not really a gripe, if an army lost a fight and was surrounded they couldent exactly run

Well, in most RTW mods I've played I have seen an AI army (with movement point left) withdraw from battle head over a bridge that has one of my forts on the other side blocking the path (a bridge not a ford) and continue with it's movement.

In a normal game turn that unit/army would be forced to stop on the bridge.

Sorry, yes I meant the skull / sword icon.

I think when you are out of the moving range or at a location that has not place to go, like you are stay behind the sea or river. I never put my army in this kind of location but I do have few times, my army was destroy because my general is out of the moving range, so now, if that case came, I will try to kill many enemies as my army can because they will be destroy anyway at end of the battle or unless I won so instead let the army destroy for nothing, I will make sure the enemy know, they will never get a victory or prisoner without a fight. Fight for right to live!

Basically I don't retreat anymore because I assume I'll die.. safer that way.

As others have posted it's because you've got no more movement points left.

It's also true that skull doesn't always appear - I think that is more to do with there being no-where to retreat to (for instance when you've trapped an army in a cul-de-sac, the other instance is where you're seiging a settlement and another army attacks - the garrison will have the skull symbol against it).

It's always best to not auto resolve battles unless the odds really are in your favour to an overwhelming degree.

it happens also when the army has movement points left and is in open field with hundreds places to withdraw to...in RS it happens even more often than any other mod, never understood why...

It's very easy to resolve this, just save your game before you retreat
