WASHINGTON (CNN) -- About 100 people, including students majoring in homeland security and criminal justice, were arrested Tuesday in an undercover drug sting at San Diego State University, officials said.

Officials say the evidence seized includes 50 pounds of marijuana, four pounds of cocaine and 350 ecstasy pills.

Among those arrested, 75 were students, one of them a criminal justice major charged with possession of guns and cocaine, authorities said. One student allegedly dealing cocaine was a month short of obtaining a master's degree in homeland security at the California school and worked under campus police as a student community service officer.

Campus police initiated the investigation about a year ago, after a student's fatal overdose in May 2007, university President Steve Weber said. About five months ago, as the investigation evolved, campus police sought and received help from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

There was a second overdose death in February at a fraternity house.

"If proven guilty, these individuals have preyed on students and have ruined hundreds of lives," Weber said. In addition to facing criminal charges, the students have been suspended from school and evicted from campus housing, he said.

Twenty-one people who are not students were arrested recently on a variety of drug charges, officials said.

Damon Mosler, chief of the narcotics division for the San Diego County District Attorney's Office, was surprised by what he described as the dealers' openness about what they were doing.

"They weren't picky about who they sold to," he said, alleging that undercover officers would simply call them and say, " 'Hey, I heard you deal. Will you sell to me?'

    "And they did."

Officials say the evidence seized as part of Operation Sudden Fall includes four pounds of cocaine, 50 pounds of marijuana and 350 ecstasy pills. Authorities also took one shotgun, three semiautomatic pistols and $60,000.

In all, authorities confiscated more than $100,000 worth of drugs, Mosler said. Bags of marijuana weighing four or five pounds would sell for $4,000 to $5,000, he said, and a kilogram of cocaine would sell for about $17,000.

Before going to Las Vegas for the weekend, fraternity members involved in the sale of drugs sent text messages to their customers saying, "We're going to close out our inventory" and inviting them to "buy the cocaine at discounted prices," Mosler said.

After the weekend, they sent another text message saying they were back and ready to do business, Mosler said.

Search warrants were carried out last week on suspects' houses off campus, and search warrants were served Tuesday at on-campus housing.

Mosler described the students as "mid-level distributors" who were selling more than a person might buy for personal use.

He identified Phi Kappa Psi and Theta Chi as the two fraternities involved. In the latter case, firearms were found in the house, he said.

The firearms included semiautomatic 9 mm or .40-caliber handguns and a rifle, Mosler said.

He said the students face charges that include possession for sale and sale of cocaine, ecstasy and marijuana.

DEA agents infiltrated several student drug distribution cells and made more than 130 drug purchases and seizures, a news release said.

Authorities said they infiltrated seven campus fraternities and found that in some, most of the students were aware of drug dealing by fraternity brothers.

I laughed reading this. Was it meant to be a joke?

The point here I think is that these students thought it was harmless, and didn't learn to cut it out when a student died.

That should have been the lesson right there, that they cannot go much further continuing in the conduct they had. It should have ended there, but they were careless, and heartless enough to keep moving on with their dealings.

These were kids who thought it was ridiculous for drugs to be in such a culture as it was, and set up their own network. Safe, effective, heat-free. They all were at college and university, they all wanted to be something important.

So what the does it say about the current drug policies that these kids' lives are now ed?

I go to SDSU. You should see all the news crews around here. A few of the students were released without charge, but most of them are reaping what they sowed.

You know I can see 10, 20 even 30 to build up more and more evidence but sorry 130 times sounds more like DEA looking to score then enforcement work

Id sooner we stop the war on drugs and the war on poverty over the war in Iraq, Its hurting a lot more americans. And costing a hell of a lot more and weve been fighting it for decades now with no end in sight and no exit strategy.

I mean other than the weapons this is nothing compared to what we had on campus in the 60s.

The war on drugs is good at the higher end of operations, busting many users just clogs up the legal system, the suppliers at high, middle and low operational ends need to be targetted more.

War on poverty needs to be revamped, and USA industry and commercial enterprises need to stop moving production etc. out of the USA. everytime I buy a piece of electronic equipment it seems to be ,ade in China or elsewhere, and those cheapo and thin flannel shirts made in China and the Carribean just fall apart and sure as heck don't do much to stop the cold in the Winter, and etc.

I bet most of the people don't do much in the way of any time. Busting users, and low level dealers doesn't do much. DEA is always seeking to go to the next level and get as high as possible in the distribution circles.

These people I would say are probably way more normal than people think. People make assumptions that coke dealers and such are like movies but really it can be your average college kid that just likes that extra cash. Ive had a lot of friends that were dealers from Marijuana to coke at various points in their lives. They all gave it up by now, but they still talk about the money they made in comparison to working an honest job.

Ive always entertained the thought of working for the DEA but to me it just seems so fruitless. They make huge busts, and tons of arrests like this but it won't change much in the overall scheme of things. I think Ill go work for FBI instead...

Habitual user-type offenders can end up doing a good deal of time depending on local laws, and if they have over a certain amount of drugs, although still a small amount, they can be in for a long time with a felony conviction.

Just one of countless examples of the stupidity of prohibition.

No it is not. This is another problem the government created with stupid laws and wants us to pay for. The high end operations wouldnt be happening if the government hadnt made drugs so profitable.

So you want to ruin peoples lives? Might as well join the Gestapo

I'd prefer the Gestapo, they have flashier uniforms.

No, trust me I don't think the war on drugs is fought properly at all. That's why I said I only entertained the thought but realize that it's a fruitless endeavour.

Personally, more involvement in Columbia, Mexico and Central America by means of Special Forces and actually attacking the heads of these cartels would be far more beneficial. You want leaves to stop falling on your grass, cut down the ing tree. I don't personally have much care or mercy for a college student who's been given the opportunity to succeed in life for selling coke, though. That's even worse than a person from the projects saying it's the only way out, which at least is partly true. But college students there aren't even going to a cheap school dealing? Screw em, they got busted they deserve to go down. At least the dealers, don't know if I care about the users.

Yes, it is and it is better than nothing.

I said that busting low end drug users is/should not be the main focus of the War on Drugs, although sometimes valuable info. may be gained from lowe end users. All drug dealers from the lowest to highest level should be the target of the main operational focus of the War on Drugs.

These were college kids, they are the next generation administrators. Rid them, and we rid a chance to overthrow the redundant and harmful policies that are so deeply misguided and yet continue to live.
