Default Early Campaign versus Late Campaign

Title says it all. Which of these two do you prefer more, and why?

Late because my strategy is always to expand rapidly, and having conquered settlements already built to the point of being useful for unit production means there's no stoppin' me. Early era can take a long time to get the machine going.

With late era most factions start out with too many settlements and not enough cash.
I really like starting small and weak and becoming huge and strong. So early era is waay better for me.

I always play the late campaign but play as a smaller faction like Lithuania or the Teutonic Knights. There are a lot of wars by turn 5 in the late campaign.

Early. I prefer building my empire from scratch.

I also prefer Early, for the reasons above, but only to get to a varied later period.

However, I'm one of those people whose campaigns seems to be running much more slowly than previous versions of SS, so I'm starting to find it a bit of a grind playing the early campaign - waiting around two minutes for the AI each turn, when my turns often take not more than a few seconds (I am a big turtle), can add up to a loooong game.

Sounds like you're using bygIII. Make sure you have the 'elite units' hotfix. I mention it because it also improved my turn times noticably. I too play the same way, I've taken to playing on medium not because i want the game easier, but because I hate having the AI's settlements outdistance mine even when i'm whoring low taxes and building all upgrades first. I dislike having to invade just to upgrade lol.

Late for me. Early is a lot of fun, but the first 50 turns can be pretty pointless. And playing early era you have to be *sure* you want to use the faction you're using. Because for the most part its going to be spear militia for the next 50-100 turns.

I've had the same problem as Boyar but I checked the Byg thread in Sub-Mods and can't find an 'elite-units' hotfix.

I'm playing an early campaign as France, I'm blitzing the rebel settlements around me, but then I'm going to consolidate my nation for a few turns, build up and the like. I'm just hoping to get bren before the genoese or the HRE.

Late era for the noisy fire sticks (a.k.a muskets) and cannons, as well as awesome two-hand infantry action.

    Late.

Rebel settlement capturing rush is just boring to me, I prefer to delve straight into the diplomacy, big advanced armies and established borders.

Oh, a little bit of both, depending on the mood and faction, but the ability to start late was what drew me towards SS, so late for me then.

In singleplayer i prefere Early era because i like starting from scratch.

In hotseat i prefere late era as it is more balanced ( given that the factions beeing played have a similar size)
