Default best way to spend $320

buy yourself a 9800GTX (mine is evga). omg i am playing scale=huge, and had an army of almost 2500, the enemy had an army of like 1500 soldiers.
ANYWAYS, this card (which i bought earlier today) rocks. i turned up all the settings to high. shadows=high. antialiasing=2x.

it is a beauty to look at so many little soldiers all rendered in so much detail. i cant wait to fight the mongols and have a chance to fight their gigantic armies.

    SHYTE!!!

when i play broken crescent, the stupid computer randomly crashes in the campaign map. ill just be moving my armies or whatnot and it crashes. first the blue "fatal error" screen, then it restarts. the blue screen is displayed for like half a second, and then the computer abruptly restarts itself. i do not wish to damage my hard drive so i decided not to play it again until someone can tell me how to fix it.
i just installed a new 9800GTX. latest drivers. uninstalled all the software related to the old card (hd2600XT) including the drivers. come one, i paid over $300 for this! now i cant play md2t for fear of damaging my hard drive

    anyone know what to do?

That happened to me two days ago I'm not sure if it's video card related though. My CPU isn't overclocked at the moment and my video card is brand new and I cleaned it out fairly recently so I know it's not an overheating issue. Blue screens like this normally indicate a memory problem or it could be the game didn't address the Ram correctly and crashed your whole computer.

I would bet my hat on this being a problem with the game not your hardware. I’m running M2TW unmodded with the 1.2 patch so this problem might be resolved with the 1.3 patch. Another thing this only happened to me once, when I reloaded the game (to the turn just before the crash) the game worked fine and it hasn’t crashed since.

Not possible. The only thing that can blue-screen is a computer is a kernel error, either in the operating system as written by Microsoft or in a third-party driver. It could be that the game is inducing a latent bug in the driver, but it's still the driver's fault. If the game itself addresses memory incorrectly the operating system just kills it (unhandled page fault) with no harm to anything else. No ordinary process is capable of crashing your computer since Windows 95 or so.

I would check for beta or alpha drivers on the manufacturer's website and see if those fix the problem. In the meantime, don't worry about your hard disk, it's very unlikely that anything will get damaged in the event of a crash. I played through all of Vice City with blue-screens every half-hour due to my cruddy integrated graphics card. If you're willing to put up with the annoyance of crashes, feel free to keep playing the game, don't worry about damage to your computer.

May want to try some older drivers first, latest drivers dont always mean best. Dont worry about damaging your HD.

Could you tell us a little bit more about our system? Age, specs etc. Have you run any diagnostics, are you sure your not overheating? Any error codes yo could google?

will do. the forceware driver 174.74 was released on april 1st, so ill try the one prior to that. anyways, i have an overclocked prescott core p4. its clocked at 4Ghz, and worked perfectly fine with my previous card. the mobo is a GA-P35-DS3L. 2gigs of DDR2@8500. sata hard drive@7200rpm. windows xp pro. (might switch to xp 64bit, but im not sure if m2tw would still work? if so, i could reinstall windows and that'd prolly fix things up.
ps. yes i did contact evga about this, and they told me to wait for this to happen again, then get the error code of the blue screen. however, i dont have time to play righte now cuz im off to college
