Ah, the Lithuanians! They have such beautiful units, seriously, if I were thrown in a Med2 paralell universe and could choose how I would like to look, I would choose one of those Lithuanians with their viking-helmets and the leather-scale armour- and a large axe! But this has of course a price: In combat, they suck. Or no, they donīt exactly suck, but they must be used in a special way. Your enemies, the order, has many good infantry and cavalry units with good armour. And I must say, I am really glad how those Stainless Steel people have improved the battle AI.

You have spears. Use them against cavalry- donīt chase the cavalry, let them attack you (or they will charge your spears down in 1 second).
Spears will be your main battle line. The enemy will throw his superior infantry against them also. When you have finished the cavalry, bring your ap ("effective against armour") units (axes etc.) in the back of the infantry that decimate your spears, and charge in. And you have some good bows. Not that this really matters, but later units can deploy stakes- very, very effective against charging cavalry- deploy them wisely. And you have some skirmishers with javelins. I think that they are also effective against armour- use them against their heaviest infantry, but try not to get to much "friendly fire". The best thing would be as I described to let the enemy attack you. Use hills, let the enemy walk along way so he is tired when he arrives. Use the high ground or bridges.

Destroy their armies with those tactics, then take their cities. Build economic buildings first. When you have cities at the sea, build ports. And use spies to open the gates. Take castles. Those you can defend easily- and the enemy canīt produce his best units anymore. Use your (light) cavalry to hunt routing units, then ask for ransom.

or just use a cheat- no. Donīt.

    And now- to victory!

I agree with everything above, but would like to add the power of your horse archers. You may not get as many as some factions but the Teutonic order have none of them. I find dashing behind the enemy with my horse archers and focusing fire on the enemy knights from behind to be a very effective method of thining their numbers. This also leaves you in a rpime position to run down fleeing enemy troopsw and make a rear charge if the front line is desperatly in need.

That sounds like a perfect Lithuanian campaign. It's always fun to defend your pagan homeland from invading Catholic and Orthodox (and sometimes even Muslim) factions.

Yeah Nightbringer, you are absolutely right, I forgot the horse archers. If you shoot your enemies in their backs, their shields does not protect them (but they still often have good armour). And also right about the routing units and the charge in the rear. There is just one thing I observed: The AI behavior has changed. After I wrote this, I had to do a custom battle Lithuanians/Teutonic Order. And I used also horse archers, but those teutones used their cavalry to chase them. And the cavalry never run on any stake I deployed (but at least my front was protected by this). I donīt know if this change came with the SS 6.1 or with the latest patch, but the AI is much smarter now. And: the order has some kind of horse-archers, like polands strzelcy??, riders with small crossbows.

what i usually do when paying lithuania is get trade rites with all nieghbouring factions including the teutonic order and if i can alliances with all the nieghbouring factions except the teutons. and for the first twenty or so turns focous on building an economy. around turn fifteen i have accumulated enough money to raise two resonable sized armies with enough artillery in them to level walls. also putting spies into Konigsburg and Riga help if they open the gates for you you dont need to worry about the siege still it comes in handy. i then attack with both armies simultaniously and because of the siege i can attack that same turn so the teutonic order has no time to defend with their armies out in the field. in no time the order falls.

might i add that using horse archers against novgarod's armies is useful as well. their good range can decemate mounted boyar sons which is good because if javelin cavalry closes with your infantry your troops get severely demoralised.

I just finished a Lithuanian camapign in 6.0.
What green tea say is pretty much on the mark.
I had great success with ambushes.
Great fun and sense of accomplishement when you pull it off.
When the Teutonics appeared, I waylaid their road with numerous ambushes, until their forcers were so depleted I could engage them in open battle.
Sort of sadly, I wiped the teutons of my lands, (and the world) and my campaign, or my motivation to play died with them.

That really sums up how I felt about my Lithuanian campaign too. The world is just not the same without the silly tin can soldiers with horns screaming about Jesus nonsense.

Yeah medieval 2 doesnt seem complete without religious fanatics, i find destroying them very satisfying and all out war with them to be a lot of fun.

The only problem with the appearance of the Order in my last game was that they immediately came for my capital and i needed 3 stacks to drive them out, which was also the end of the Order, sadly they only lived 5 turns
