Default 10,000 dead in Myanmar this weekend!

    http://english.aljazeera.net/NR/exer...F0726318D9.htm

Have we become this desensitized to Asian disasters? Is the population of Asia so high that we ignore their tragedies when they reach the 5 digit mark?

I feel it has become that way. 10,000 dead and I've been watching CNN all weekend, ZERO mention of it. Has anyone else even seen this on the news?

I'm watching MSNBC right now bro, Laura Bush is on talking about this, she says we need to give more than the government is able to right now.

We don't give a crap. That's why its on the news, breaking news in fact, top story in fact, top priority in fact.

Are you sure you're not watching tapes of old news stories? Or are you just blind?

Aid to Myanmar? I can imagine what the military junta would do with that.

Dahir, the fact that this is pasted over every big news site shows that we, in fact, do care.

I think some just like to perpetually moan and complain that we don't give a crap about disasters in other parts of the world. We certainly do. Just not that much that it dominates the news for the next year.

Anyway, it's front page on The Times. And the Telegraph. And probably the Guardian, if I could be bothered to check.

Hmm saw it all over the news when it happened dunno maybe you just somehow missed it on CNN? Real tragedy though Myanmar just cant catch a break with this the goverment crack down etc. Its mind boggling grasping the number 10000 dead. We look at like Katrina here in US and we are horrorfied but imagine that many dead....its just heartbreaking.

Direct aid by boots on the ground from humanitarian agencies yes....cash to the government no. No point in helping in a manner that doesnt help actual people.

And the Burmese (Myanmarian?) Government is very reluctant to have any foreigners enter Myanmar just in case they uncover something awful the Government is doing.

Yep they have denied entry to US disaster relief workers and other countries/agencies are having major problems thanks to the government.

Gurkha's come from Nepal, not Burma/Myanmar. The two countries don't even border each other.

Right, that wasn't exactly the sentiment I was looking for but hey, I'm not running for office.

You realize the Gurkha's are immediately associated with Burma/Myanmar, right? Traditionally raised in Nepal of course, but their great history and legacy lays in Burma. That's the way it is generally speaking in Britain and the Commonwealth.

i don't know when i heard about this the first thing to pop in was

"yes this man die in the twister"

"no that not a bullet hole"

"no he is not a monk"

"give me that video camera now"

remember there are still conflicting reports about the death toll from the riots would any one put it pass them to play the death count off as twister death i don't know just what my first thoughts were about it

Oh definitely what better time to crack down on any opposition by a repressive regime then during a disaster. Wouldnt be shocked at all.

Didn't mean to come off as an , but I realize that is how it sounded.

But, I don't think you'll see Gurkhas in Burma/Myanmar for a long time. Whether they come from Nepal or Burma, really.
