    Default Vista, M2TW and BC

I'd never have thunk I would need to post here, but alas here I am.

I recently bought a sweet new laptop, but it has Vista. So I've run into issues myself with transferring over all my M2TW and BC stuff over to this new system.

    So far I:

    1) Installed M2TW
    2) Installed Patch 1.2
    3) Unpacked (though for some reason the data files are not showing up in the data folder!)
    4) Installed BC 1.0
    5) Installed BC Patch 1.05

Loaded up BC, it ran fine, campaign loaded fine. Battles crash straight to desktop (aka experience fatal error yada yada yada).

Its real late now, but tommorow I'll install patch 1.3 and try the unpacker again. But if you have any ideas on what needs to be done when using Vista please do tell this vista n00b!

    EDIT:

Don't know if its Vista related or just the graphics card on this laptop but I noticed this weird effect of the settlement name "tag" on the 3d campaign map being out of sync with the actual settlement position. Especially when panning around the map.

Miraj, i switched to Vista a few months back and i had a few problems navigating and stuff and finding things, but i've never had a problem with M2TW or BC.

But because you're a n00b, i'm gonna start by asking if you've updated your drivers (esp graphics) using your lappie service tag? Windows update is a good source, but your laptop manufacturer is the best (laptop graphics drivers are notoriously difficult to get).

Yeah I did the vista fix thing.

HG, updating the graphics card drivers is a good idea. I did go through all the windows automatic updates and such (a couple of times too!).

I'm installing patch 1.3 now and will unpack again and see if battles load, if not... I'll have to find some other way.

I had to use 1.3 patch for it to run on vista and don't run any M2TW shortcuts in SP2 compatibility mode. Disable UAC as well, it only causes problems.

I meant don't right click on them, go to properties and set the compatibility to windows service pack 2, it stops them from running. Just leave as is.

unpack to your "desk" instead of directly to the folders, since that does not work (atleast for me). Then move the files to the folders. Or maybe you know this.

    Thanks SS

Hey do you know why when I run the unpacker it doesn't unpack all the vanilla files properly?

    I ran the unpacker twice.

I honestly don't know, my unpacker always freezes and the application crashes, so I have to Ctrl + Alt + Delete it, but when I close it, it's all been unpacked. I'd advise running it as the administrator account and if you haven't already, disable UAC.

    Such noobism in this thread.

Vista has known issues with unpacking. It can take ages when compared to XP (perhaps even over ten minutes).

One might have to change the security settings on the relevant folder if its still not working. Now cos microsoft is a playa h8tr, this can be tricky.

When you right click on the relevant folder in your program files (e.g. C:/Prog Files/Sega/M2TW/BC etc), you select "properties". If you can see and select the "security" tab then excellent. (If you cant, its because God hates you see below).

Click on edit, (then continue if it prompts you in that annoying way). Under "group or user names", select the "Users(x)\Users" group (where x is your laptop name eg. "Miraj's expensive laptop that doesnt work").

Under "permissions for users" select and check "modify" permission.

Click OK and windows will set the security permission on your relevant folder

    Click OK again

Thats it. If this doesnt work, its cos the world is divided between Pro's and n00bs. Thems the breaks.

Edit: Miraj, you're not unpacking to your "temporary folder" are you? Cos that would be super-n00bization, a rare condition, but treatable thankfully.

    Also this can help:http://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?p=1880763

Thanks for the link HG. I think I was indeed Noobing it up real bad with the unpacker. I'll use Irishiron's advice.

Aside from unpacking everything else is working very very nicely now. Battles are gorgeous and smooth, map bug was fixed and campaign runs fine. Gosh I'm going to have sex with this laptop all summer. (this thing is better than my actual system!!)
