Default Rising Gas Prices?!? Use Public Transportation Spoiled Americans!

I believe all over the world its not really a big deal for people to go about everywhere using public transportation due to high gas or vehicle prices. But how come in America it seems like a huge bummer? Are they too used to luxury and comfort or what?

I understand that in many places there are not very many buses. But Im sure if there are more people who start taking it then the city will begin to listen to the demand for more buses.

By the way, in China many people still go to work with bicycles.

It might be a big deal if you commute a couple hours to work and public transportation isn't otherwise available.

People don't necessarily live within the city, or even county of where they work. To find affordable housing they spread out. Making their middle class salary work for them, while they work in perhaps San Francisco or downtown LA.

Public trans use is on the rise, but it's not a perfect solution and doesn't meet everyone's needs.

I categorically deny that anyone commuting 2+ hours a day to work a full-time job is lazy. You speak of which you do not know.

Actually sales of gas guzzling SUV's are dropping in the US while up 50% in China, so I wonder whose becoming more comfortable. With a population 4x larger than the US you can have 20% of the Chinese population driving cars and 60% riding bikes and you still have more auto drivers in China than in the US.

As for public transportation. Most large US cities have decent public transportation, even LA has pretty good public transportation once you start using it. But sometimes its just easier to and necessary to drive. I used to bike to work when I lived 10 miles away. Now I live 17 miles away and the roads I would have to ride on are just too narrow, so I take the bus, but my job is such that sometimes I have to stay late so I drive.

But being lazy to drive? Makes me wonder how much driving in a city you do. Driving yourself you sit in traffic and have to constantly be aware, but may get places a bit faster, in Public Transportation you sit back in air conditioned vehicle and can read or write for an hour.

ere not lazy. Public transportation is pretty much immpossible in most of the US. Its huge.Again its no coincidence that the price has gone up since the dems got congress. They haver always wanted higher gas prices for just this reason. Read Gores book.

Yeah, I used to commute from Ontario to Pasadena on the 10 to 210 as I recall. 4/10 days. Leave at 6 AM, get home at 7:00 PM. At the time, it wasn't feasible to take public transportation: public trans didnt match up, & I had a company car that I used to work every day.

I lived in Ontario due to housing pricing. Literally couldn't afford to live closer.

Oh and I like public transportation, use it to commute between home, work and school. Actually cheaper with the prices of gas where there at. (I got a student pass).

It's astonishing how anyone outside the USA doesn't know that USA doesn't have a well networked transportation system, only in the metropolis areas (NY, LA etc) but the rest of the countryside is only can be traveled by cars.

Yea the US is twice the size of Europe with less than half the population density.

    Exactly my perception of Americans.

Yeah, I used to commute from Ontario to Pasadena on the 10 to 210 as I recall. 4/10 days. Leave at 6 AM, get home at 7:00 PM.
Nothing special about that in less rich countries. Back in my original country (Where gas costs 60cents/gallon ) my mother drives everyday to work since 8AM and gets home at 9PM. Imagine most other people who have to take public transportation that looks like this:

In conclusion, you guys still have it better. Spending a few hours on a bus like this is nothing:

So dont be lazy Americans. There are others who have it much much worse.

It's astonishing how anyone outside the USA doesn't know that USA doesn't have a well networked transportation system, only in the metropolis areas (NY, LA etc) but the rest of the countryside is only can be traveled by cars.
Then dont live in the suburbs or the countryside. You cant always have everything the way you want it. Often you have to make a choice because you cant have it all.

Your mom rides a bus 25 miles to work?

Did you miss the part where I said that public transportation wasn't even available back then? There is not a magic bus or other form of public transportation available for everyone.

I know of people that commute 2+ hours one way to get into San Francisco to work. Public Trans is available part way, but not the whole way. They drive 1 hour, park and ride. As I said, usage is up.

We work hard to have it better. There's no laziness in hard work.

I walk/bike at least 6 miles every day at school while going from class to home to class etc etc. I am lucky I am a student and can afford the rent and get free transportation because I had a college ID card.

Back home there are no busses, if I ride a bike I will probably get hit by a car thanks to no shoulder and no bike paths, and my work ranges from being 10 miles to 50 miles away.

I don't think anyone disagrees with you when you say you don't like the people that always cruise around when they could find other means.
