Frontline. Sword units&cav go to the sides and perform flank&rear attacks to the enemies that are engaging your crap barbarian spears.
Also, use them against pinned cavalry if possible. A single spear warband unit(in not in a deep formation) can be easily swept away by heavy cav, especially so with bodyguards.
