    Default need help modding traits

    Hi There,

I was curious to learn more about traits. I downloaded and installed a 'trait editor' designed by Brighdaasa, which looked like a useful tool. I tried it out on a version of the export_descr_character_traits file modded by the Blood, Broads & Bastards team.

The Traits Editor seems well designed and easy to use. But I have no knowledge or expertise in this area. If I make changes in the export_descr_character_traits file, what else must I do to make these changes show up in the game? Are there other files to edit? If so, which ones, and what must be done?

Finally, when looking at the edited EDCT file I noticed something odd. Under the trait 'level', instead of saying 'family' it said 'ily'. Instead of saying 'loves_father' it said 'es_father'. Instead of 'love_Dad' it had 've_Dad' or 'ove_Dad'. And 'bad_blood' was 'd_blood'. Under 'effect' it had 'effect rale' and 'effect tpoints' and 'effect ty'.

Is this normal or are these errors?

I'd really appreciate some guidance here. Many thanks in advance for replies.

Never used this tool, but if its doing 've_Dad' rather than 'love_Dad' then definately it will screw up your game.

The only files you need to look at when dealing with traits are

export_descr_character_traits.txt: This has the trait, its effect and triggers within it.

export_descr_vnvs_enums.txt: List of all the headings which allows the game to look them up in:-

export_vnvs.txt: textual description of the trait, that you get when you mouse over it in the character profile.

There is also a TraitValidator tool around somewhere (cannot remember where I got it from).

If you get the file wrong then you will get a CTD on start up, so always back up the last correct version.

To err is human, but to really foul things up you need a computer.

    Hi Quark,

That's great - many thanks for the info.

Looks like this tool screws up entries in the EDCT, which is a shame, because it has a nice clear layout.

I'll do as you suggest, make back-ups, but will edit in Notepad.

    Thanks again!
