    A quid = 1 GBP, or 100 Pence.

If you were talking pre-decimalisation it would be 1 quid = 1 pound sterling = 20 shillings = 120 pennies.

Nah! That would be so boring!

Besides! 12 is a much more useful and flexible number. It can be divided 2,3,4 and 6, whereas with 10 it's only 2 and 5.

If 10 is so cool, why aren't there 10 days to the week, and 10 months in the year?

I guess that would depend on the exchange rate but the dollar has its root in the European Thaler, which dates back to the early 1400's. The British equivalent was known as the Crown, which was five shillings. So at one time it must have been 1 Dollar = 1 Thaler = 1 Crown = 5 shillings.

It amazes me on times what nonsense I have stored in what passes for my brain!

I'm afraid I don't know any comparisons for the pound, all I know is that the Euro/Dollar exchange rate is just simply horrible for us Yanks right now.

    Ugh.

US exchange rates in general just suck it up royally.

And I'm going to be in Israel for 2 months this summer.

    *sigh*

Summer greetings to everyone. Time to open those beers, let the boogie man out and rock' n 'roll till the morning.

See you all in a few months, maybe; and if not... remember to abide finnish advice! Drink beer and be merry!

I've just been watching Behind the Lines, the World War One movie dealing with shellshock/PTSD.

Why do people say war is fun again? I honestly don't get it, never have, never will.

You just reminded me that Tolkien was also a potential victim of shellshock. Not nice, I say.
"Romans not only easily conquered those who fought by cutting, but mocked them too. For the cut, even delivered with force, frequently does not kill, when the vital parts are protected by equipment and bone. On the contrary, a point brought to bear is fatal at two inches; for it is necessary that whatever vital parts it penetrates, it is immersed. Next, when a cut is delivered, the right arm and flank are exposed. However, the point is delivered with the cover of the body and wounds the enemy before he sees it."

    - Flavius Vegetius Renatus (in Epitoma Rei Militari, ca. 390)

    Variety of reasons really:

    1) Natural human instincts to hunt

    2) Compete

    3) Fight

    4) Take pride in 'trophy's'

Unsurprisingly, War has all of these things. It is Human instinct to make War, we can't deny it. We my as well accept the bitter fate before us and take pride in our work.

Pride? What pride? Pride in killing other people? That's disgusting.

Generally speaking, war is only fun to those who sit in armchairs and never have to participate in it, or suffer its consequences, first hand. I guess it's a bit like hunting: the human gets lots of fun, but I wonder how jolly the bear or the fox thinks it is. :hmmm:

No, Pride in our capabilities to fight. Nations and people will always clash, and often not for any moral or just reason at all; rather, just for power or pride. So why not use war to our benefit? Why not take pride in our capabilities to benefit ourselves? The world is not a nice place, and war is not fun, but it is necessary, and we should not be ashamed to use it.

Pretty much the only gambling game I've played was blackjack, and that was at home, not at a casino. I've also played poker, but I prefer blackjack, its a little easier for me.
