    Default Unspecified Error

    Hello,

I'm new to Medieval II, but I've listened to my friends talk about the game and how great it is and that I should get it. They also said I should get this mod, which from what I've seen is amazing. However, whenever I am about to start a battle on the map, after the loading screen, the game encounters an unspecified error and closes. I can play vanilla just fine, so I'm confused why the mod seems to cause this error for me. This happens in both campaign and custom battles. Can anyone help me find what is causing the crash?

    Thanks,
    - Nanook

I have uninstalled and reinstalled part 2 twice now, and the problem persists. Any further instruction would be greatly appreciated.

Try reinstalling both parts in the right order.

Just to be clear, you have installed MTW II and Kingdoms to the default folder eg C:\Program Files\SEGA\Medieval II Total War and then installed parts one and two of SS there by creating C:\Program Files\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\mods\Stainless_Steel_6. However when you start up the game it loads fine and you can activate your characters, press end turn etc, but when they enter a battle you get a CTD with that wonderful CA statement of 'unspecified error'. You are not using a NOCD crack and have the english version.

Essentially the more facts, the easier it will be to help.

I have uninstalled and installed the mod several times today, and yes installed it in the right order as well. My friend let me borrow his normal Medieval II and his kingdoms expansion to let me test it out to see if I could get into the game. Both of the games work fine on their own and allow me to play them. Stainless Steel starts up fine, goes through all the pretty loading screens, and lets me select what I want to do at the main menu. I choose custom battle, choose the game type, and select the units I want, and what the computer controls, etc. Then after all the set up is complete, the loading screen goes, and when it gets all the way done loading and is about to change to the battlefield, I get this error that closes the game. So I'm really at a loss of what could be causing this issue for me. Also, I have not unpacked the files, so the geography files are not there to delete.

I have the same Problem, but only with the Templars.
I can play England and co. normal, start Battles etc.
But with thr Templars i cant start a fight, with the beginning of the loading, the game crashes

Can you tell us what shows up in the logs?
    Medieval II Total War\logs\system.log.txt

The problem occurs with all factions for me, not just the Templar. The system log reads as follows:

    18:21:16.593 [system.rpt] [always] CPU: SSE2
    18:21:16.593 [system.rpt] [always] ==== system log start, build date: Aug 3 2007 version bld-medieval2-kingdoms-104 (45562) ===

18:24:32.921 [system.rpt] [error] Medieval 2: Total War encountered an unspecified error and will now exit.

    Hopefully this helps some.

Unfortuneatly that is as much use as a microsoft error message. Can you actually load up a game, but not have a battle. If so post the game, so people can see if it loads on their system, at least that way we could see if its game specific or system specific.

Nanook has used the exact same discs and files that I used to install the game on my own computer. I have absolutely *no* problems with SS. Nanook, on the other hand, can start a game and play it fine until he gets to the battle screen, at which point it errors in an unspecific way and quits. We've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game and SS 6.0 several times. Nanook can play vanilla M2 and vanilla Kingdoms just fine, but the instant he tries to play SS, it crashes. I have supervised him in doing precisely what I did to install the game, but to no avail.

And by game, do you mean the save file?

    Hi Legend,

As wolfslayer said: the messsage "21:37:33.656 [system.io] [warning] open: :?vI@@ is missing" is not good.
I guess that some file(s) must be corrupted, so I would reinstall 6.0 and patch 6.1 again.
