Yes, those are available after the Marian reforms, while before that you get Perioikoi hoplites.

Re: Replacement of Spartan Phalangites
Ok so after the reforms can you have both Periokoi and Spartan Phalangites or just the Spartan... I kinda like this idea lol

Re: Replacement of Spartan Phalangites
They're not the same, the Periokoi are a hoplite unit while the Phlaangites are... phalangites. Peroikoi are available Pre-Marian while the Phalangites are available Post-Marian.

I wasn't clear i guess. What i meant was that the old spartan phalangites and the new periokoi phalangites are the same unit with different name
under the patronage of Perikles in the house of Wilpuri

Re: Replacement of Spartan Phalangites
They are definitely kick-ass to use...what I like best is they are an ATG skin, which to me means - they look awesome!

Re: Replacement of Spartan Phalangites
The perioikoi of Lacedaemonia were not Spartans per se. They were the 'outdwellers'; the merchant and tradesman class of people of the Spartan domain. They were not from the six villages that made up Sparta. They could send their sons to the 'Agoge' if they had the money but that did not make them Spartans. They had to be sponsored for adoption by a Spartan family before a son of a Perioikoi became a Spartan. They were free, sort of, and they did fight with with the Spartan army. I doubt they were outfitted as well as the warriors of Sparta. As such I think the the Spartan Perioikoi should have a dressed down look to them. The 'Spartan Phlangites' of XGM are perhaps the most splendid looking unit in all of RTW. I think that skin should represent the main Spartan army only. Just my thoughts, don't mean to be critical, nor can I do up a skin but the 'Perioikoi' and the 'Spartans' are two different class of warrior, in ability and in look......S

Re: Replacement of Spartan Phalangites
Yeah, I'm not so sure why the change was made either. It's not the region that would make superior troops but rather the Spartan society.

Re: Replacement of Spartan Phalangites
I think the point of two separate units is to have them change from hoplites to phalangites, to represent the adoption of Macedonian tactics.
Remember, this isn't the Spartan Royal Guard we are talking about, just the Spartan hoplites/phalanx
