seems to be a complete lack of AI controlled spies and assassins after the initial ones have died off.

well better like that than having 200 spys and assassins roming on your territory and killing everything you got. Btw, squalor and rebelion are strong enough like that without having to add the one spys and assassins would bring...territorys of the AI rebel like nothing all time already, and the AI has huge problems to defeat the rebels enough like that....
The AI gets bonuses enough, besides for the AI itself it's better that they are at war with eachother...

When your family member gets assassinated what happens? do you like get a screen that says that he died of age or something? Cuz if its not that or a noble death my family members have never been assassinated which is pretty lame considering that I assassinate just about everything I can except sometimes generals cuz they are usually hard to do. I also never get a screen of assassination attempt foiled or something like that.
As for spies the AI seems to use lots of them. It happened quite a few times now that the gate just opened because the AI had a spy in the city. Now I roam around with my spies in my country, because they spot enemy assassins and spies mostly it seems. If you got a spy in your city theres a significant chance that an invading spy will die when they are in there too or try to come in.
