    Default YouRome!

    Hi,
do you think it is possible to keep open a thread where RS fans puts photos about places/cities/monuments/ruins related to game? (ancient time photos related to west/mid-west civilizations). Not internet pics, but handmade ones, taken during a holiday or in a place where do you live.

I know there is a similar section in the TWC but it is quite large and middle-age oriented..

It would be a nice way to show interesting places, and at the same time, speak a bit about you or your city.

What do you think?? I can start with some roman cities ...
    (sorry for bad english )

Sure. Go for it. We'll see how popular it becomes.

Sounds like a good idea. I suggest perhaps changing the title of the thread to attract more attention though.

    Good luck

Happy to see you liked the idea, dudes
First of all, any idea for a good title?

Then, let's start with a mix of photos taken in various places of italy (my country) and one from London.

This photo is taken in the roman theater in Fiesole. Fiesole is a small town really near Florence (go for it if you are in proximity!); the roman name was Faesulae, but the city was founded by the Etruscans (if not before...) with the name of Vipsul. The city was in fact a really important city-state among the Etruscans.

And now, let's start with some funny photos, hoping somebody continues posting

THIS IS SPARTA? Not really, this is London, British Museum (and the helm isn't spartan..)

Principi (or hastati?) in action! Photo taken along the Po river, during a Celtic Festival. If i remember well, the group is named Legio I Italica http://www.legio-i-italica.it

Another photo taken from a Celtic festival (near Ravenna this time). Two brave gauls fighting each other.

And then, the last photo: me playing Rome Total War in Rome on a Wall! (Yes i just won my campaign )
If you are curious, the map is a sculpture i founded on a wall of the Venus Temple inside the Forum.
PS: Do you think the roman church will persecute me for my pagan tshirt?

Ok, these are just a bunch of photos from my HD. I have several photos of Rome and many other italian cities, but unfortunately many of these are about middle-age or renaissance times.
    Now let's see yours

Nice photographs there. I have some photos from my trip to Rome, but unfortunately I was too young to really appreciate where I was at the time. Itching to go back now.

    Has anyone been to Athens?

Here's a small selection of pictures I took in rome, the quality isn't great (I used my PDA) but I think they are good enough.

These where taken at the forum:

    Taking the plunge

A view of the forum from the Tarpeian rock.

    Eternal fire

    The temple of Vesta.

    Virgin ground

The courtyard inside 'The House of the Vestals', with the Palatine hill behind it.

    Up the Palatine hill

Two pictures of the Imperial palace grounds:

    Where the caesars walked

    The ravages of time

These where made along the Via Appia Antica:

    The long road

    Under the olive trees

    To the fields of Ellysium

    Hope you like them.

Love them, thanks a lot Scipio praeditus. You made me remember standing just on the lower level of your first shot.

    Glad they worked for you.

It took a lot of waiting to get shots that wheren't crammed with tourists, and eventhough it's just a 1.2 megapixel cam they turned out allright.

:EDIT: This one also deserves a showing:

    The holy way

I can confirm I am italian and i am proud to have a past so rich.
You can find beautiful places in the whole world, but italy is very particular. Italy wasn't a unified country until mid'800. In fact the country was a puzzle of little kingdoms and republics, each one with strong traditions and culture (and history). Today it is still possible to see these differences. Food (so different in every province!), dialects, monuments are easy examples. I live in Rimini (Ariminum), and i just scoop when i see how things changes when i travel in a near city; 50km (30 miles) are enough...

Unfortunately, today italy seems unable to solve its problems, in particular in the southern part.. Ahhh, politics...
Many people are very frustrated about this, you can see the problems, but you feel just "disarmed"...
Sad to say, but i feeling myself more european than italian...

PS: Any photo from outside italy?

The Smithsonian had a wonderful article in it about the reconstruction work on the Athenian ruins that was fantastic. (it could have been a different magazine, but that picture of the Parthenon reminded me of it). wonderful pictures.

EDIT: added rep to everyone who gave pictures, thanks for sharing your experiences
Life goes on, and Carthage keeps killing Romani like its nothing.
