game won't load

i am playing rtrpe and for some reason, out of the blue, the game will not load. it just stays at the loading screen forever. i let it sit for seriously a half hour and nothing happened. any ideas of what causes this?

The game froze at some point. Were you tyring to load a saved gamelike the last one saved? Have you tried to load an earlier saved game? Have you tried to start a new campaign? Have changed any files?

i have changed many many files but it worked perfectly. i exited out of the game because i had to go somewhere. i may have changed one file before i left, but i don't remember which one or if i even did. but anyways, when i came back i tried to play and it froze. by the way i did not mean loading screen, i meant the first screen with all the legal stuff on it. i guess my question is, is there a certain thing that causes this? like editing a certain file? or could it be many things?

There are two things that can help get an answer. Use the -show_err switch in the target line inside your icon. Delete any and all map.rwms you find. If it does ctd, it ought to give you some vague generic message. Write it down for reference. That is your light at the end of the tunnel. If it goes through, try to start a new game.

If you've changed a file incorrectly it could freeze or CTD (I would expect a CTD). If you added the '-show_err' switch to your shortcut target (as irishron has suggested) you may get a message. CTDs don't always return a message though - it's things like missing files that are picked up.

i have show_err in correctly and it worked on previous errors. there is no CTD at all. it just gets to the screen with the legal stuff and stays there. ctrl+alt+delete does nothing and i have to hold down the button and shut down the entire system. i really have no idea what to do about it.
