I'll throw in an Asian reference. Tran sisters in Vietnam, 1600's. Started a guerilla war against the Chinese in Northern Vietnam. Think they end up being raped and sown into sacks and thrown in a river.
Know that you shall die like whores and the cries of your writhings shall rise to please their lord, so before the sword, side with me in the slaughter....
Our history books never mentioned this
It's really shameful for our supposed-cilvilized Ming government to commit such disrespect against leaders of other countries

I wasn't aware of any other female generals in Western Europe during the Middle Ages outside of Jeanne d'Arc.
As ever when a probing history question comes up... Wiki!

Off the top of my head for the ancient period we've got people like Artemesia of Caria (Battle of Salamis), Eurydice III (lead a rebellion in the Seleucid Empire) and various other Macedonian successor kingdom queens. There's plenty of "barbarian" Queens in the ancient period too, Boudicca of course being the main one known to history.

Not hard to find on the net. Elanor of Aquitane is perhaps my favorite.
J J Norwich short History of Byz has some nice refernces to females who rulled or fought alongside their men
Dont see why see was not a general, she provided around a 1000 ships, not bad logistical support, and thats without any of the input women of her stsure gave to others to impement.
Hey, never worry about crimes of your ancestors. You are, after all, your own person. I could say with confidence that every major nation or state that has ever existed has commited horrific crimes. The trick is to embrace the good done by ancestors while utterly condemning the bad at the same time.
For example, I take pride in the way Britain helped provide a language that would prove able to allow the world to communicate better, but I will not hestitate to criticise the mess it and other countries made of Africa and the middle-east among other things.

I was thinking of this disney movie girl, that chinese chick that acted like a man, with the little dragon...naah she won't do I suppose.
As far as the medieval period is concerned you see many strong women behind the scenes, but not that many women actively leading armies à la Jean D'Arc.
My favourite strong women at the moment, apart from sweet Eleonara is the wife of Stephen of Blois... "oh honey I don't wanna crusade..." "like hell you will, I'm the daughter of William the Conquering bastard you retard nitwit" Stephen leaves for the holy land... heehehe![]()

While I heartly agree with Eleanor I feel that Matilda of Tuscany la Gran Contessa would have given here a good hiding (military wise), she certainly annoyed Henry IV of the HRE.

I remembered one woman that we can add to the list. Fulvia the wife of Marc Antony and mother in Law to Octavian (for a while on both accounts). She was certainly not of the normal female Roman mould.
We could also add Cleopatra VII but that may be seeing too much into Octavian's propaganda to consider her as Antony's co-general.

the only thing women are good at are cooking, cleaning and servicing the troops.
