Multiplayer log in help!

Alright, so I picked up the Gold Edition of the game today. I installed everything including the Kingdoms 1.5 patch. Problem is, I can't play online on the vanilla game. The expansion pack multiplayer works fine, just not the vanilla game and this is with the exact same account. Every time I try to log on it says "connection failed" or "failed to logon", something along those lines. I did get online a couple times in the vanilla game, but now it won't work at all. Any idea on what the problem could be?

Gamespy. No connection means all their lines are busy. The only thing with modems you don't get a busy signal, just some anal response.
