    Default Protectorates

I read somewhere that setting up a nation as a protectorate will make it so it won't betray you. Other than this, are there any other benefits to doing this (with force diplomacy)? Because if it's true that they won't betray you, what's the point of establishing alliances?

Protectorates also give you any surplus money they have at the end of their turn. It's never very much though, considering that usually if they are a protectorate they probably have a really bad economy.

I guess you can move through their territory unhindered as well. I think the point is to demonstrate that one faction is more powerful than the other, but neither side wishes the conflict. An Alliance, on the other hand, is an agreement between perceived equals.

In terms of gameplay, a protectorate can act as a buffer zone between you and another faction.

Unless you offer them an incredible sum of money* they probably won't agree to become your protectorate. In fact, even if you do offer them the money they still won't accept.

The only way I know of to get them to be come your protectorate is to use the force diplomacy script, here http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=149264.

If you're very lucky, then you may, once every four thousand years (or every time a new RS build is released ), actually get someone to be your protectorate.

Using RS I've managed to get some factions to become my protectorates. Generally, these are the smaller factions at the start of the game rather than a fairly strong faction.

It only cost about 100K plus a few settlements.

I may be able to get a screen shot from a save game but I did a clean install of 1.5a not that long ago.

I fail to see the benefit of protectorates, except from a role playing perecptive. You have to pay a load to get them as protectorates to start with (unless you use force diplomacy) and then if your grow bored of them and wish to sieze their lands, you can't just declare war, your have to lure them into attacking you. They may serve as a buffer zone, but giving border provinces to a dying faction works just as well and is cheaper.

They can be used as a buffer state in an attempt to get a ceasefire with another faction or to prevent a new common border with the third faction (which will also trigger a war).

Sometimes it can be 'interesting' in helping out an ailing faction against others. It depends on what you want to get out of the game.

yeah its interesting what other factions will do, ive been paying GCS in my pergamum campaign and they have now taken all of greece, and are moving into macedon now (who are my enemies) and its pulls off soldiers from my front while i have my hands full with the selucids on the other front.

Yeah i use protectorates (through FDip, as i think its more historical and fun to keep factions around) As buffer states. I also conquer for them aswell if i can, seeing as i see the protectorate as a bubble through which i can raid nations, without being on their border resulting in possible losses. Plus i dont think the protectorate declares war with you, thus you can raid, and they wont attack through your buffer state.
