Default Is Venice really that great?

Alot of people say they love Venice, I have started 1-2 campaigns sometime in the past with them that I abandoned rather quickly as they didn't seem to be so great faction. What is so awesome about the Venetians?

    Theres MANY reasons,

Their best infantry unit has a upkeep of only 150... Venetian Heavy Infantry,

They have 16 Attack and 16 defense; and Effective Against armor, basically they rape all other Infantry, Light and Heavy(and mounted knights when they get close), also their charge is very good.

Another is their location, Venice(the city) is a staging point for the invasion of the Italian Peninsula. Also, start recruiting in Crete right away and send soldiers from Crete to Corinth, take that. However; If playing Stainless Steel (which I am) Take Athens right away, seeing as Italian Militia outrank every infantry until turn 30(or 10 for stainless steel) So right away use the Militia to its best, because after around 30 turns they become Obsolete and thats where your Heavy Infantry come into play.

Venice will rely heavily on trade, which is good.

Heres a screenshot from my recent Campaign.

Well you'll only use Militia to blitz the first few of your regions, Then you should settledown, build some HeavyInfantry plus the AWEESOME Venetian Archers (their real good) And the combo will destroy any Byzantine and European army.

When you go to invade a country have 1 stack of

1 General, 2 Mt. Knights, 4 DisMt. Knights, 6 Venetian Hvy.Inf. and 4/6 Venetian Archers. Fill the rest with either Venetian Hvy inf or more knights.

The pavise crossbow militia usually gets more kills than my venetian archers.

All you need is the itialian spears, pavise crossbow militia, and some cavalry knights and you're set. You can blitz every faction out there except for the mongol and timurid horde.

Yeah, they are one of the stronger factions out there one of their advantages early in the game is their Italian settlement which makes them easily rich(kinda, depending on what you do). Once you did right on your economy, later you can build those armored tanks, namely Venetian Heavy Infantry and the Venetian Archers and destroy every faction that comes your way. And also note their militia units are same as the other italian states so an army of militia is another choice besides the seargent and armored seargent you can train on castles, I read something about this:

    seargent spearmen=Italian Militia
    armored spearmen=Italian Spear Militia(upgrade armor)

now that is good if only I can remember were i read that thing.

    i think
    italian militia=spear militia
    italian spear militia=sergeant spearmen

    idk though

and yes, they are that great
super militia units, good cav (despite what the game says) GREAT economy, relatively ok starting position (good for conquering italy) room for expansion, good VHI, good archers, good crossbows, good caraccio standards, great artillery, great gunpowder units, great naval units, etc... etc...

As Venice I always go straight for Naples then Palermo. Take out the Sicilians early on as they will attack you within a few moves. Once you get Sicily you have a number of options - Tunis and go for Timbuktu with the huge trade opportunities. Also you can take Crete, Rhodes and then Cyprus. The cash will start pouring in.
