    Default Phalanx animations

Hi, I've played mods like Roma Surrectum and ROP and i love the way hoplites don't form phalanx. It's not that i'm against historical accuracy, but i find them so clumsy. Is there a way to stop units forming phalanx and just use usual sized spears? If so which files do i need to mod?
    Thanks,

Open up export_descr_units file and remove the phalanx attribute..If the unit has long pikes you can change that also, instructions are included on the top of the edu..

    EDU = export_descr_unit from Rome - Total War/data
Find the entry for the hoplite and remove the phalanx ability. And replace the long_pike(if they have it) with short_pike for example. In RTRPE the hoplites can`t form phalanx but are still a close formation with more bonuses than regular spearmen. And they have the ability to run during a charge while keeping their ranks. I find it more proper than the vanilla phalanx which is actually the macedonian phalanx. You will also need to remove the secondary weapon as in the example bellow(use that text) because in RTW only phalanx units can use a sword too. For regular spearmen it causes weird glitches and CTDs.
Here`s how the spartans look in vanilla:
    Code:
    type greek hoplite spartan
    dictionary greek_hoplite_spartan ; Spartan Hoplites
    category infantry
    class            spearmen
    voice_type Medium_1
    soldier greek_hoplite_spartan_pylos, 40, 0, 1.3
    attributes sea_faring, hide_forest, can_sap, very_hardy
    formation 1, 1, 2, 2, 5, square, phalanx
    stat_health 2, 0
    stat_pri 16, 4, no, 0, 0, melee, simple, piercing, spear, 25 ,1
    stat_pri_attr spear, spear_bonus_8
    stat_sec 12, 3, no, 0, 0, melee, simple, piercing, sword, 25 ,1
    stat_sec_attr no
    stat_pri_armour 3, 9, 5, leather
    stat_sec_armour 0, 0, flesh
    stat_heat 2
    stat_ground 2, 0, 0, 0
    stat_mental 14, disciplined, highly_trained
    stat_charge_dist 30
    stat_fire_delay 0
    stat_food 60, 300
    stat_cost 2, 1190, 460, 120, 180, 1190
    ownership greek_cities
    and in RTRPE v1.7:
    Code:
    type greek hoplite spartan
    dictionary rtr_greek_hoplite_spartan
    category infantry
    class            spearmen
    voice_type Medium_1
    soldier greek_hoplite_spartan_pylos, 30, 0, 1.3
    attributes sea_faring,hide_forest,command,can_sap,very_hardy
    formation 0.9, 1, 2, 2, 4,square
    stat_health 3, 0
    stat_pri 12, 7, no, 0, 0, melee, simple, piercing, spear, 0 , 0.4
    stat_pri_attr light_spear, short_pike
    stat_sec 0, 2, no, 0, 0, no, no, no, no, 25 , 1
    stat_sec_attr no
    stat_pri_armour 2, 20, 6, metal
    stat_sec_armour 0, 1, flesh
    stat_heat 1
    stat_ground -4, 0, -8, 0
    stat_mental 19, disciplined, highly_trained
    stat_charge_dist 30
    stat_fire_delay 0
    stat_food 60, 300
    stat_cost 2, 1342, 676, 104, 112, 1080
    ownership greek_cities, slave
I`ve put in red the important parts.

    Sorry I should've known that
Don't worry I know about the export_descr_unit file. All I need now is to learn all the shortcuts for words...

    Thanks for you're help,

If you want different animations as well, SignifierOne has a download of new skeletons. The the most prominent I think are the realistic gladius stabbing action of Roman troops, and in your case, gets rid of the phalanx style hoplites, and has them use their spears overhead as they stab. There are arguments both ways for doing it that way, but it certainly does give you an entirely new look for hoplites, and so adds variety to the game.
