Default [EU:Rome] A couple of questions...

I got EU:Rome a few days ago and I'm really loving it. I've just got a few quick questions:
    • I'm playing as Rome and my population are crying out for slaves. How can I generate/capture more slaves? Is it just by a certain National Idea or can I enslave barbarian provinces?
    • How can I increase my army support limit? I am currently paying an excess amount of army maintenance because my base limit is 11 and I have 15 units on the field. I can't disband any of my Legions due to a barbarian invasion in the north of Italy.

Complete eliminate any hostile troops would boost up Slave population, or you can wait the slaves produce off-spring each year.

The best, of course, is defeat a 30k barbarian horde and eliminate them.

I am not sure about this one, but it seems that army support limit is rather a garbage issue that has no effect on anything at all.

Just produce as many troops as possible and ignore the support limit.

Similarly,if you build up the fortifications in the border states you can have less troops since they'll be entrenched or something.

Unless I'm getting confused with Vicky.

Because I am over my army limit, I'm paying +95% on top of my normal army maintenance fees. If I continue to build more and more troops, I'll be paying a lot of monthly expenses.

How can I totally eliminate a rival army? I'm still only a few years into the game, but I recently defeated a barbarian horde of roughly 3000, with my two Legions consisting of around 17000 troops, but I seem to spend a lot of time chasing the retreating army as they bounce from province to province. I wish there could be a way that I could crush the enemy rather than just break them.

That is why you can build troop endless, but rather try to reach a balance; I normally maintain at least 5 gold per month and spend the rest for troops.

Same as the way of EU3, unfortunately. That is when cavalries come to handy, but you need to get horse from whatever way in order to build cavalries.

That was why I hit Gaulic tribes once I bordered with them - to get the precious horse province.

    Thanks for the info.

I've got EU3, but never got stuck into it, so I'm a bit of a Paradox n00b. I'm suprised at how easily I managed to get into Rome. I'll have to go back to EU3 soon as I seem to have got used to the system a bit.

I'm only early into the game so I've just finished swallowing Magna Graecia and Epirus (with the help of Carthage). Should my priority be to push north into Gaul to claim horses? I was going to begin a Punic War and try to claim Sicily, Sardinia and Corsica. I know that I can play however I wish, but a few ideas will help this humble n00b!

No, Rome is quite tricky to get horse in early game actually; you can either trade for horse (peaceful way), or attack Macedon during a Macedon Civil War (plenty of chance there would be a civil war in Macedon, I have seen at least three times during my first 100 years) and get a horse province. Advance into Gaul is rather slow since I prefer to colonize until I border with those Gauls (give you a base to launch invasion), which takes some fifty years to do so. However, occupy Gaul is the most easiest way for those who love war (I deal four tribes with 40k men; the total enemy barely have more than 15k men), not to mention the tribal alliance system would always bring a lot of tribes into one war in one time.

By the way, don't ever try to start a Punic War against Carthage; in fact, they are so wealthy that they normally outnumber you double; I rather let Carthage fight against Egypt then I backstab them when either sides is losing.

Edit: Damn it, the evil Macedon Empire declared war on me two months ago for no reasons; I should deal them when they were in Civil War instead supporting rebels...

Gonna have to wait for patches for that one I think.. there's a lot of talk about that sort of 'ping pong combat' on the offical Rome forums.

Well if your over your support limit and you need those troops theres nothing you can do about it ofcourse! Basically all the factions are generally over the force limit. It isn't like EU3. If you wanna be cheap you can spam the pop growth omen... but as I said thats kind of cheap and I'd suggest playing a mod without omens . If your desperate for slaves you can send troops into barbarian lands and stir them up but just make sure your the one who ends up facing them with 10-1 odds once their numbers are down. Faster troops help with this. Slaves actually diminish over time(regardless of NI)... which I guess is realistic as they would have been burnt out.

I've just been trying a mod that solves a few of the problems. I am researching very quickly, which does alarm me, it must be said...

Tried two games so far - Rome and Carthage and doing well. Rome is an absolute powerhouse...
